12 11 – Video – Reader’s Chair Length : 00:01:00 Narrator explains one way to improve fluency and have fun with reading at the same time is with a reader’s chair. Narrator explains what the reader’s chair is and how the concept of the reader’s chair works. A reader's chair allows students to share with their classmates a favorite book they have recently read. A reader's chair gives a student the opportunity to select a 1 - 3 minute passage from his/her favorite book and share with the class. The teacher gives each child a date to present his passage to the class. The student can spend as much time as they choose practicing the selection and are encouraged to practice every night by reading the passage out loud so they can read fluently and with expression for their presentation. Practicing the presentation will give the students the opportunity to practice fluency skills like pausing at commas and periods and using voice inflections to show excitement or other moods. Once the student has practiced their passage, they get to present it to their classmates while sitting in a special chair. The presentation can involve how they feel about the story and information about the setting, characters and illustrations. After the presentation, the reader gets immediate feedback from their teacher and classmates. medium shot of narrator filmed at eye level videoed in the classroom while sitting in the reader’s chair.
