The Horrocks Family

Roy Horrocks What do you know about Roy? What will your Initial Assessment reveal? Which other professional bodies are involved? Who would be in the TAC (Team Around the Child)? What information would you record in the CAF (Common Assessment Framework)? What ‘Outcomes’ do you want for Roy? When would you review it?

The Common Assessment Framework – CAF - is designed to be used when…. a practitioner is worried about how well a child or young person is progressing (e.g. concerns about their health, development, welfare, behaviour, progress in learning or any other aspect of their wellbeing) a child's or young person's needs are unclear, or broader than the practitioner's service can address.

The CAF Process http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFb_lvqzJXw THINK Assessment – Planning – Intervention – Evaluation

Every Child Matters The five outcomes are universal ambitions for every child and young person, whatever their background or circumstances. 1 Be Healthy 2 Stay Safe 3 Enjoy and Achieve 4 Make a Positive Contribution 5 Achieve Economic Wellbeing They are mutually reinforcing. For example, children and young people learn and thrive when they are healthy, safe and engaged; and the evidence shows clearly that educational achievement is the most effective route out of poverty

June Horrocks What do you know about June? What approaches will you have to consider? Who else will you need to involve? Assessment – Planning – Intervention – Evaluation

Assessing June’s needs It is important that June’s needs are met based on her circumstances. These can be split into 2 areas: Health and Social needs. These would both be governed by a care plan made up by Social Services.

Health These would be provided by the clients GP or hospital. In June’s case these would include medication, and help with her mental illness.

Social Needs Assessment Q. When meeting the needs of the client what factors do you as a social worker have to be aware of? What attributes or practices might hinder your relationship?

Ethics and Boundaries Many professionals enter into the field of social work to help others grow and improve their life circumstances. Yet, when working with clients, social workers must maintain clear boundaries to assure professional integrity and responsibility.

This is not supporting your client’s social needs!

Interventions The theories of psychology, sociology and politics have been adapted to provide guidelines on how the roles should be fulfilled. The psychodynamic approach Task centred approach Cognitive-behavioural approach Empowerment & Advocacy

The psychodynamic approach This approach aims to look beneath the surface and expose inner conflicts and emotional blocks. The client would be encouraged to understand how past experiences and relationships can affect behaviour and current relationships.

The aim of the social worker would be to help the client develop ideas by getting them to explore feelings. It would be important to develop a strong relationship with the client especially when talking about feelings such as anxiety or anger. The ‘therapeutic’ relationship would be used to encourage clients to gain insight and ‘unblock’ their problems.

Task centred approach The emphasis is on moving forward and changing behaviour through practical tasks. This would involve the social worker making agreements or contracts with the client. The client would be the focus of the work and would have to identify areas for change and work with the social worker within a time frame to achieve the targets.

SMART TARGETS S M A R T SMART TARGETS Specific (describe what you want to accomplish) Measurable (written in terms that can be clearly evaluated) Acceptable (written by you – not someone else) Realistic (reflects your abilities) Timely (clearly specify completion dates)

Cognitive-behavioural approach The key principle is changing the way a client thinks which will have an effect on how they behave. Techniques are used to get the client to question their own thoughts and change their mental perception (belief system) The social worker will aim to replace these with more positive aspects by challenging all irrational & negative thinking and getting the client to adopt a more balanced view. By doing this more positive thoughts and beliefs will be adopted.

Empowerment & Advocacy This takes the view that clients have little control over their lives as they are under social services, this is reinforced and made worse by social workers ‘solving’ their problems for them – leaving them more dependent. The power balance aims to be moved towards the client and way from social services.

The role of the social worker is to enable people to take control over their own lives & have a voice in society. To try and work with the client to overcome any obstacles they may face in society. Advocacy involves speaking on behalf of a client especially those with learning disabilities, or those who may have a problem with communicating.
