3 LOOKING WESTWARD With partners, locate the following and color in these areas: 1.LOUISIANA PURCHASE 2.FLORIDA (Which we purchased from Spain) 3.OREGON TERRITORY (occupied with Britain) 4.LANDS THAT MAKE UP THE SOUTHWEST (owned by Mexico)

5 EXPANSIONISTS: Americans who favored territorial growth; began to want New Mexico, Texas, and California MANIFEST DESTINY: US was DESTINED to own most or all of North America -- It became the rallying cry for most Americans! --Only white men would receive the benefits from MANIFEST DESTINY --Slave holders hoped to expand westward, too!!

7 THE JOURNEY WESTWARD Between 1840-1860: 260,000 Americans crossed the continent to settle on the West Coast. Many were farmers in the Midwest The Great Plains was avoided; thought of as a ‘wasteland’

10 THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Scavenger hunt: Here are the rules: 1.You need to bring a picture of a map that includes all the territories of Mexico in 1846 (you can print, take a picture, etc.) 2.A picture and translation of the ‘border’ James K. Polk thought was sufficient to separate Texas from Mexico 3.The address Polk issued to Congress in May, 1846 to ask for war 4.A cartoon drawing of the party’s symbol who supported the war 5.A list of the US advantages heading into war with Mexico. 6.A map (either copied or drawn) of major territorial wins

13 GADSDEN PURCHASE 1853: US bought this strip of land to put in a new railroad It was bought for $10,000,000

14 SETTLERS FLOCK TO CALIFORNIA 1848: Workers around a sawmill found flecks of gold in the American River (east of Sacramento) 1849: 80,000 Americans were headed to CA “California Gold Rush”---’49ers!!!! 1847: Population of CA: 14,000; by 1852: 225,000!!!!! Immigrants, especially from the EAST, were immigrating to CA

15 YIKES… NEW TERRITORIES DRIVING US APART! What is going to be the problem with territories filling up so fast? (Hint: population, applying for statehood!)
