1 Welcome to the christening of Samuel Atticus Clarence Long Sunday, 22 nd July 2007 Our wish for our son… We hope that you find something to smile at, every day of your life and that the simple things always bring you joy and pleasure. May you experience the world and learn from all around you, Show tolerance and respect to others and appreciate the same from them. Be whoever you want to be and be proud of that person and remember that it matters not what you do, but who you are. Know that hard work often results in the most valuable of things and that in life true value rarely involves currency. We want you to grow and evolve, secure in the knowledge that you are surrounded with unconditional love. May your family be a haven for you when you are troubled and always provide you with a sense of home. May you be brave enough to dream, even when it seems foolhardy and strong enough to sense that there must always be hope. Learn to laugh at yourself and know when to laugh with others, Be honest and true with yourself and everyone you meet. Be fortunate enough to have good friends, and always be a true friend, May you find your true love and cherish it always. If your heart is broken may it enable you to appreciate life and love, and value both eternally. But for now, we simply want your days to be full of wonder and hope that each new thing you learn brings you great delight. Know that you are the world to us and that our lives are richer every day, because you are our son. “ Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at me, and I've tried to live so I can look squarely back at him.” – Atticus Finch, “To Kill A Mockingbird”

2 Sam’s Godparents What’s In A Name? Samuel Samuel Long was Paul’s paternal Great Grandfather. Samuel is a Hebrew name meaning “his name is God”. Atticus Atticus is of Latin origin and means “from Athens”. Atticus Finch is the central character in Brooke’s all time favourite book - Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Clarence Clarence was one of Brooke’s father’s middle names. Clarence is of Latin origin and means “one who lives near the river Clare”. On this day.. Sam was born on Friday, 11 th May 2007. Also born on the 11 th May are: Irving Berlin (the American composer); Salvador Dali (the Spanish painter); and, of course, Holly Valance! Both Bob Marley (1981) and Douglas Adams (2001) died on the 11 th May. We have entrusted Sam’s god-parenting to two special people - Michael Long & Sarah Rodman. Both Michael & Sarah have created beautiful relationships with Jack and have added so much to his life. Their friendship with our first little man made them the obvious choices for these special roles in Sam’s life. We trust them both implicitly to help guide Sam through his life, to be his friends and advisors and people he can confide in and trust. We know that they will each bring beauty and love to Sam’s life, as they do to ours, and we look forward to watching their relationships grow and evolve. Children Learn What They Live Dorothy Law Nolte If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive. If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, they learn patience. If children live with praise, they learn appreciation. If children live with acceptance, they learn to love. If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal. If children live with sharing, they learn generosity. If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness. If children live with fairness, they learn justice. If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect. If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them. If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live. On the 11 th May 1997 the supercomputer, Deep Blue, beat chess champion Gary Kasparov. On the 11 th May 868 the first ever known printed book, The Diamond Sutra, was printed in China. “If I have a monument in this world, it is my son.” – Maya Angelou
