Do Now

Unit 2, Lesson 1 SWBAT solve one step equations using adding and subtraction SWBAT solve two step equations using inverse operations.

Vocabulary Addition and subtraction are inverse operations; they undo each other. An equation is two expressions that are equal (the same on both sides)

Solving Equations When we solve an equation, we want to isolate the variable. We want the variable to be on one side of the equation all alone. To keep our equation balanced, whatever we do to one side of an equation, we have to do the same exact thing to the other side.

Example One: Keep it Balanced! x - 6 = - 3 Step 1- Draw a line Step 2- Label your sides Step 3- Sort and Balance. ( Think about what is happening to the variable now and how can you undo it.) Step 4 – Simplify! Step 5 - Check your answer by plugging the answer into your original equation. Does your answer make sense?

Example Two: Keep it Balanced! m + 12 = 3 Step 1- Draw a line Step 2- Label your sides Step 3- Sort and Balance. ( Think about what is happening to the variable now and how can you undo it.) Step 4 – Simplify! Step 5 - Check your answer by plugging the answer into your original equation. Does your answer make sense?

Example Three: Keep it Balanced! w – (-6) = -2 Step 1- Draw a line Step 2- Label your sides Step 3- Sort and Balance. ( Think about what is happening to the variable now and how can you undo it.) Step 4 – Simplify! Step 5 - Check your answer by plugging the answer into your original equation. Does your answer make sense?

Reciprocal A reciprocal is the inverse of a number

Example One: Keep it Balanced! 7w = 91 Step 1- Draw a line Step 2- Label your sides Step 3- Sort and Balance. ( Think about what is happening to the variable now and how can you undo it.) Step 4 – Simplify! Step 5 - Check your answer by plugging the answer into your original equation. Does your answer make sense?

Example Two: Keep it Balanced! Step 1- Draw a line Step 2- Label your sides Step 3- Sort and Balance. ( Think about what is happening to the variable now and how can you undo it.) Step 4 – Simplify! Step 5 - Check your answer by plugging the answer into your original equation. Does your answer make sense?

Example Three: Keep it Balanced!

True or False? x + 4 = -6 + 4 + 4 True or False? x + 4 = -6 + 4 + 4

True or False? 3x = -6 -3 -3 x = -9

Group Challenge Ten times a number plus four is equal to 24. What number am I? Ten times a number plus four is equal to 24. What number am I?

Think: Why can’t you subtract 2/3 from both sides?  You can’t subtract 2/3 from both sides because ______________________________ ______________.

Think: Why can’t you add 5 to both sides?  You can’t add 5 to both sides because ______________________ ______________________.

Think: Why can’t you subtract 2 from both sides?  You can’t subtract 2 from both sides because _____________________ ____________________.

Think: Why can’t you add 5 to both sides?  You can’t add 5 to both sides because ______________________ ______________________.

Create your own! Silently and independently create your own multi-step equation – 2 minutes Share with your partner and solve each other’s equation – 2 minutes

Independent Practice Silently and independently work on the multi-step problems Whatever you don’t finish is homework!
