4 Milling Parameters Illustrated
(a) peripheral milling, and (b) face milling

5 Slab Milling Slab milling is used for machining flat, plain, horizontal surfaces parallel to the axis of cutter with the help of plain or slab milling cutters. - The w/p is held on the table of the machine and the feed motion is provided by the longitudinal motion of the table. (a) slab milling

6 Face Milling Face milling is employed for machining a flat surface at right angle to the axis of revolving cutter. A face milling cutter mounted in the spindle of a verticle milling machine. The operation can also a face milling cutter mounted on a stub arbor in a plain milling machine.

7 Single or double angle cutters may be used as per the type of job.
Angular milling Angular milling is used for machining a flat surface at an angle other than right angle to the axis of milling machine spindle. Single or double angle cutters may be used as per the type of job.

8 The irregular contour may be concave ,convex or of any other shape.
Form milling Form milling is the operation of irregular contours by using form milling cutter. The irregular contour may be concave ,convex or of any other shape. Form milling is done at a speed 20 to 30 % lower than that for plain milling.

9 Gang milling Gang milling is the operation of machining several surfaces of a w/p simultaneously by mounting of cutters on the arbor. The cutters may have same or different diameters and each produces it’s own distinctive surface.

10 Milling two sides of a w/p.
Straddle milling A special form of gang milling in which may two side and face milling cutters are adjusted with a desired distance between them is known as staddle milling. Milling two sides of a w/p.

11 This arrangement is known as string or line milling .
String milling When no. of pieces to be milled large and size of each w/p is such more than one w/p can be on the m/t. This arrangement is known as string or line milling . This is possible because the milling cutter may be entering one w/p while it is leaving the preceding w/p thus reducing approach & overtravel distance to the cut.

12 Slot and groove milling
- Width of cutter is less than workpiece width, creating a slot in the work This slot can be of different shapes such as T-slots,dovetail slots etc. Plain slot can be using plain milling and end cutter milling. (b) slotting

13 To make a groove on the shaft is known as key seat.
Keyway milling Keys are needed on many engineering components for mounting of pulleys gears , bushes etc. To make a groove on the shaft is known as key seat. Plain keyway are cut with plain milling cutter and sunk keyways may be milled with end milling cutter.

14 Saw milling Saw milling is the operation of producing narrow slots on a w/p by a slitting milling cutter. Used for parting off operation. Cutter is directly placed over one of the T-slots of the table.

15 Side milling A side milling cutter is used for machining a flat vertical surface on one side of the w/p. Two side milling cutters may be used when two sides of w/p are to be milled. The space between two cutters can be adjusted. Similar to straddle milling.

16 End Milling This operation is used to produce one or two flat surfaces with the help of an end mill. The surfaces produced may be horizontal ,vertical or inclined with respect to the top of the machine table.

17 Profile Milling Profile milling is used to duplicate the profile of a template or master w/p. The cutter movement is guided by a tracer control unit has a finger tracing the template to be copied. This finger runs in contact with the outline to be duplicated.

18 Gear milling Plain and universal milling machines can be used to produce spur gear. Cutter mounted on arbor with its axis at right angle to w/p. Cutter is adjusted so that its central line in radial with blank Knee is adjust required depth of teeth.one tooth finish table returned to starting points.

19 Thread milling Thread milling is used cutting external & internal on jobs which cannot be conveniently handled with taps and heads. Typical examples are jobs of large diameters beyond the capacity of available die heads on which thread runs upto a shoulder.
