This church was built between 1827 and 1865. It was designed by Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vasse. The specialty of this church is, undoubtedly, its dome. It has the third largest unsupported dome in Europe after the Vatican in Rome and St Sophia in Istanbul. This church was built between 1827 and 1865. It was designed by Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vasse. The specialty of this church is, undoubtedly, its dome. 5 The Mdina Cathedral is the real cathedral of Malta. Although we have St John's Co Cathedral, a diocese can only have one cathedral. St John's is called co- cathedral. In 1693 Mdina was hit by a severe earthquake and the cathedral which before was in an Apullian-Romanesque style was practically totally destroyed. When it was re-built between 1697 and 1702 it was built in Baroque style.

Built in the 1920s, the impressive basilica which you see here is built on the site of a chapel where it is believed that a Gozitan woman, Carmela Grima, heard the Virgin Mary speak to her in 1883. Ta’ Pinu Basilica is located out in the countryside and is dubbed as an architectural masterpiece, especially its interior. The old chapel still exists and is located at the back of the basilica. The name Ta’ Pinu comes from the man that used to take care of the old chapel. His name was Filippino Gauci and Pinu is the local diminutive of his name.

The foundation stone of the Cathedral was laid on 21 September 1697 by the Archpriest Nicholas Natale Cassia- Magri. The Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà had prepared a scale model of the new building, which allowed work to continue uninterrupted after his death early in 1703. The Cathedral, a fine baroque structure in the form of a Latin cross, is built entirely of the local limestone. It was officially inaugurated on the eve of the Assumption, 14 August 1711. On the 16 September 1864, Pope Pius IX established the diocese of Gozo and Comino and the Matrice was declared the Cathedral of the new diocese

Nadur was separated from the Matrice Church of Gozo (today the Gozo Cathedral) and established as a parish for the eastern part of Gozo, by Bishop David Cocco-Palmeri by a notarial decree dated 28th April 1688. Father Bernard Haber (1689-1705) was chosen as the first parish priest and was specifically detailed to build the parish church on public land on the "Ta' Nadur" hill, donated for such purpose by Fra Gregorio Carafa (1680- 1690), a grand Master of the Order of St John of Jerusalem.

Our Lady of Grace Parish Church (Sanctuary), Zabbar. The devotion to Our Lady of Grace dates back many centuries and the Sanctuary has since been a centre of frequent pilgrimages. The 1570s already offer sufficient documentation testifying the importance which this Marian shrine had already acquired in Maltese life. Incidentally, it was till then the only place where Our Lady of Grace was venerated. Zabbar became a parish in 1615.

In 1380 a church dedicated to St. Philip of Agira was built in Casal Zebugi, a tract of land situated in the middle of the small communities which had developed during the previous Arab occupation of Malta. The name of the town literally means "olives" in Maltese; it derives from the large olive groves that stood in and around the current location of the church and the centre of the town. The town was bestowed with the title of Città Rohan by Grandmaster Emmanuel de Rohan in 1777. [ Incidentally this is the church where I was baptized.]
