2 Objectives What are the physical features of Japan and the Koreas?
What natural resources does the region have? Which climate types are found in the region?

3 Physical Features The Koreas are located on a peninsula.

4 Japan’s four islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.

5 Mountains dominate the region. The Japanese Alps are the longest range.

6 There are plains along the coast and the rivers valleys
There are plains along the coast and the rivers valleys. Japan lies along the “Ring of Fire”.

8 Natural Resources Korea’s mountainous terrain and rivers are good for producing hydroelectricity.

9 North Korea has iron ore, copper, zinc, lead, and coal.

10 Japan’s Resources The Oyashio Current and the Japan Current create Japan's superior fisheries.

11 Climate types Humid Continental-
Hokkaido, northern Honshu, and northern Korean Peninsula

12 Climate Humid subtropical-southern Japan and the rest of the Korean Peninsula.

14 History of Japan 300 B.C. Rice farming is introduced; irrigation becomes important for political power. Shintoism is the first religion to develop. Buddhism and Confucianism follow from China.

Most people live on the small coastal plains.

The airport near Osaka is built on an artificial island.

24 Major Japanese Cities Tokyo-megalopolis has almost 30 million people.
Tokyo is the capital and center of government.

Ginza is the largest shopping district in the world.

Yokohama is Japan’s major seaport. Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe form another major megalopolis.

Mid-1890s Japan defeats China in the Sino-Japanese War. 1910-Japan annexes Korea and becomes a harsh ruler until after WWII.

U.S. And Soviet troops oversaw the division of Korea. Unable to agree on how to unite North and South.

36 1948-The Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea were officially created.

37 1950 - North Korea invades South Korea and the Korean War is fought until 1953.
The demilitarized zone is the most heavily guarded border in the world. Why does U.S. care so much about South Korea?

39 Today-North Korea Government controlled by Communist Party and a command economy. Government owns all land and housing and controls job access. Capital P’yongyang.

40 The country cannot produce enough food and lost its main source of aid with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Famine killed thousands in the 1990s. Has been developing nuclear weapons since the 1990s.
