6. TROPICAL STORM Definition: A localized, very intense low-pressure wind system, forming over tropical oceans and with winds of hurricane force.

7. TASK: Take the sub heading : Location and movement of tropical storms. Q) Where in the world do you get tropical storms? Do you get them everywhere? Is it only certain places? Do you hear about tropical storms all year?

9. LOCATION OF TROPICAL STORMS. Tropical storms are found between the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern hemisphere and the Tropic of Capricorn in the South. They originate over the eastern side of oceans and move westwards where they cross the land causing great devastation before dying out. Tropical storms over 74mph are called hurricanes in the West, cyclones in the East and typhoons in China and Japan.

10. MOVEMENT OF TROPICAL STORMS Tropical storms usually move from the SE to the NW. In the Northern hemisphere. Tropical storms will therefore cross the tropic of Cancer. Many head towards the SE of the USA and the North of South America and the Caribbean. Much of SE Asia can also be affected by tropical storms.

11. Do you notice any other pattern in the location of tropical storms?

12. The majority of the tropical storms affect countries that are developing. This means that the threat that they pose is far greater because developing countries have less money for technology to predict, manage and respond to natural hazards.
