Organisms, Behaviour and Health

 Training outcomes:  To compare a lesson teaching the concept of cells to a year 7 class with and without the use of a visualiser.

 Part 1 – without a visualiser  Have students (trainees) collect a microscope and prepared slide (in a lesson you can have the students prepare the slides themselves).  Show students how to correctly set up the microscope in a ‘gather round’ demonstration.

 Go round to each student/small group and help them to focus the microscope and show them what they should be looking at.

 Part 2 – with a visualiser  Set up a microscope and show students, with the aid of the visualiser, how to correctly focus it.  Point the lens of the visualiser down the microscope and, using the image projected, focus the microscope, showing the students how to find what they are looking for.

 With the projected image on the screen show students what they should look for and then help individuals who are perhaps still struggling to get it in focus.

 As students often find it hard the first time (sometimes every time) they use a microscope, to find what they are looking for, showing them all at the same time what to look for and how to focus the microscope will help them in their learning.
