3 Rhetorical Analysis  How does President Obama get the attention of the American people at the beginning of his speech?  General scenarios that seem personal to his target audience.  Making a very real connection with the audience “It’s how the son of a single mother became the President

4 2014 State of the Union  What are the immediate needs of the country? (Provide at least four of them)  ____________________________________________ ____________________________________________

5 Which of those needs mentioned is THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE TO YOU? Why?  Personal connection to the speech or letter is essential to getting the attention of the audience. My personal connections were with the topic of education, the minimum wage increase, and income contingent student loan payments because they are all related to the future success of my students.

6 What is his plan for America to solve or approach these issues/needs? (Fully explain at least ONE part of the satisfaction plan)  We’re working to redesign high schools and partner them with colleges and employers that offer the real-world education and hands-on training that can lead directly to a job and career.  This excerpt addresses the issue of teaching relevant curriculum in an engaging setting.

7 What is one thing he asks you visualize?  And since the most important investment many families make is their home, send me legislation that protects taxpayers from footing the bill for a housing crisis ever again, and keeps the dream of homeownership alive for future generations of Americans.

8 What is one thing he asked the American people to do?  But if we work together; if we summon what is best in us, with our feet planted firmly in today but our eyes cast towards tomorrow – I know it’s within our reach. Believe it.

9 Appeals  In the State of the Union Address, President Obama uses rhetorical devices in his speech such as appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos. Find an example of an appeal to pathos, ethos, and logos.  Pathos-”Let me tell you about one of those families I’ve come to know.”  Ethos- “And we all continue to join forces to honor and support our remarkable military families.”  Logos- “Businesses plan to invest almost $100 billion in new factories that use natural gas.”
