3 Objectives Candidates will know the learning patterns of effective learners to be able to identify and incorporate learning experiences in their classrooms to facilitate those learners. Candidates will know the various levels of student engagement to be able to assess engagement in their classrooms and ultimately increase authentic engagement in their classrooms. Candidates will develop vocabulary and comprehension strategies in order to integrate literacy instruction into their classrooms.

5 Warm-up Reflection… “…the ability to look back and make sense of what happened and what you learned. But it’s also the ability to look forward, to anticipate what’s coming up and what you need to do to prepare.” Turn to a partner and share a fun thing you did over break and a teaching goal you have for the new year.

6 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #10 – Be selective Determine what is essential in order for students to understand the context and target 1-5 key words that are not clearly defined in the context of the text.

7 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #9 – Morphemic Analysis Teach students various word parts and their meanings to help them determine new words

8 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #8 – Teach Context Clues First, have the student try to define the word on their own. Then write a sentence using the word so that it’s definition can be determined. Ask students to identify the context clues that helped them determine the meaning of it.

9 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #7 – Use Visual Boxing Divide a box into four sections. In the top left, write the word to be defined. In the top right, draw a picture of the word. In the bottom left, give an example of the word. In the bottom right, give its opposite or non- example.

10 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #6 – Use Personal Connections Assist students in using personal experiences and what they already know to make connections to new concepts and/or words.

11 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #5 – Use a Prediction Chart Make a table with the following: Vocabulary, my guess before reading, my guess after reading, and clue words. Have students try to guess the meaning of the word before reading. Have them define it again after reading. Have them identify key words that helped with the definition.

12 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #4 – Connect Two Ask students to make connections with two of their vocabulary words.

13 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #3 – Use graphic organizers such as a Venn diagram Compare two vocabulary words and have students identify their similarities and differences in meaning or structure.

14 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #2 – Use Word Games Use puzzles and games such as crossword puzzles, concentration with words and definitions, Password, Bingo. Website – Puzzlemaker.com

15 Vocabulary Top 10 Ways To Teach Vocabulary: #1 – USE the word throughout the year! Students need many opportunities for meaningful practice of the technical and specialized vocabulary they encounter in each of the disciplines taught in our schools. True understanding of words is more than memorizing definitions.

16 Comprehension Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is a reading comprehension practice that combines two instructional elements: –Modified Reciprocal Teaching –Cooperative Learning

17 Comprehension Reciprocal Teaching : Teachers and students take turns leading a dialogue concerning key features of text through summarizing, questioning, clarifying, and predicting.

18 Comprehension CSR consists of four comprehension strategies that students apply before, during, and after reading in small, cooperative groups.

19 Comprehension The four reading strategies are: A) Preview (before reading) B) Click and clunk (during reading) C) Get the gist (during reading) D) Wrap up (after reading) Read about these 4 strategies included in your agenda

21 Comprehension Modeling Phase 1 using Chapter 1 in Pathways to Understanding pp. 3-8.

22 Comprehension Now in your small groups, assign the following roles to each of your members: 1. Leader – Tells the group what to read next and what strategy to use next. 2. Clunk expert – Uses clunk cards to remind the group of the strategies to figure out their clunks. 3. Gist expert – Guides the group toward getting the gist. 4. Announcer – Calls on members to read the next passage.

23 Comprehension Read through Phase 2 in your agenda. Practice Phase 2 using Chapter 2 in Pathways to Understanding pp. 9-19.

24 Strategies for Active Learning Read pp. 22-46 and identify one strategy that you will implement in your class this week. At your table, share how you will use it.

25 Homework…due Jan. 12 Type up a description and reflection of the strategy you implemented this week. Reminder: RENORM and REMIND students of expectations! You can begin again if necessary!
