3. Strengthening resilience and response to crises Global Challenges research fund of £1.5bn over next 5 years Fleming Fund to fight against antimicrobial resistance increased to £265m. New Global AMR Innovation Fund will be launched with China UK Vaccines Network increased to £110m Ross Fund of £1bn for research & development into products for infectious diseases - partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

What we know of RCUK plans Global Challenges research hubs & spokes – £5-10m Strategic Advisory Group Stakeholder engagement activities on priority areas for the Common Pot – Subsequent focus on priority themes Research Council delivery plans now available Calls from individual councils already being circulated

6. Institutional sponsorship from EPSRC £317k awarded to Leeds; to be spent by March 2017 For ODA research projects and knowledge exchange KE must build on EPSRC funded projects Some of the work (<50%) in each project can be non- EPS May pump-prime new areas or build on existing collaborations Part of the funding for each project may be used to develop partnerships with stakeholders (including research institutions) in developing countries

7. Common Pot priority areas Health To tackle diseases, strengthen health systems and reach the world's most vulnerable. Clean Energy To provide access to clean energy, including new technologies and the behavioural insights required for successful introduction to developing countries. Sustainable Agriculture To improve nutrition and food security, support technological innovation, and increase resilience to climate change Conflict & humanitarian action New insights and approaches for preventing conflict and violence, build stability and strengthen humanitarian action. Foundations for Economic Development To understand what works best for developing countries to build foundations for economic development-macroeconomics institutions, innovation and private sector growth, cities & infrastructure, education systems, jobs and skills. Other potential topics Resilient systems Mass Migration and Refugee Crises

8. Existing ODA research clusters at Leeds Clusters emerging from research that is: – securing funding for ODA research – generating strong research outputs, e.g. REF impact case studies, 4* publications – aligned with an identifiable global challenge theme – working with established in-country partners University working group discussions – 12 staff with significant ODA-funding (8 Faculties represented)

Action Plan Develop preliminary academic case for hub proposals in core areas of world- leading excellence – e.g. water & sanitation; climate impacts & vulnerability; international health – Build and secure consortia of UK-spokes and global stakeholders – Organise high-profile global stakeholder event(s) – Engage with research councils and DFID Leeds spokes – Identify high-potential UK hubs and link in – Identify potential spoke areas, e.g. migration, governance, gender, heritage, security, ethics, data analytics Develop guidance and support on “pathways to international development” for grant proposals across a wide range of disciplinary areas Work with the Communications Team to raise the profile of our global development research Make better use of the Centre for Global Development Develop opportunities with existing overseas partners (e.g. SWJT) Explore ODA-related opportunities for UAF and top-performer appointments

Centre for Global Development Draws on the expertise of more than 100 members from different schools and faculties working in international development Facilitates interdisciplinary working – Newton Astrophysics programme and evaluation for ODA CGD represents UoL on national and European learned societies, DSA, EADI Annual summer school for researchers and others seeking a career in international development, including offering a number of bursaries to participants from LMICs RiDNet – Researchers in Development Network run by and for PhD students working in developing countries Members teach global development-related UG and PG modules and programmes http://cgd.leeds.ac.uk/
