1 USING ALPHA-NUMERIC GRID SYSTEMS
A road map uses an alpha-numeric grid referencing system (e.g. A3) that people can use to locate places. The road map area will have a grid made up of horizontal and vertical grid lines over it labelled with a letter (A, B, C, etc.) and with a number (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). Road maps have an index of alphabetically listed places beside which is the alpha-numeric grid reference for the grid square the place you need to find is located in. USING ALPHA-NUMERIC GRID SYSTEMS

2 Identify the Alpha-Numeric Grid Reference
1 2 3 4 5 A B C D E

3 ROAD MAP SYMBOLS Most maps also use various colours and symbols to communicate information. For example, road maps will use red for major highways. Various symbols are used for people to quickly find locations of public use and necessity such as hospitals, airports, etc. For Example: = = Hospital = airport

4 WHAT IS IT? FIGURING OUT SYMBOLS!

5 TRY IT OUT!! Complete Q.# 1 to 10 from page 32 of your text, using figure 3.2 (map and legend on p. 33). This will reinforce what you have learned about cardinal and compass directions, using an alpha-numeric grid system like a road map and map symbols.

6 BATTLESHIP! Read your instructions on the handout provided and shade in the appropriate number of boxes to represent each ship on the grid entitled, “My Battleship Grid”. Make sure your battling partner does not see where you have located your ships! Take turns asking for an Alpha-Numeric grid reference and keep track of hits with an “x” and misses with an “o”. Who won?
