Piedmont Community College Nurse Aide Pathway Project HEAL Health Education Accelerated Learning Alisa Montgomery, Dean, Health Sciences Dawn Oakley, Associate ADN Director Angela Conner, Nurse Aide Coordinator

Partners  Piedmont Community College  Person County Schools  Caswell County Schools  Kerr-Tarr Workforce Development Board  Person Memorial Hospital  Duke Hospital  Roxboro Healthcare and Rehabilitation

Employer Engagement  Both Person Memorial Hospital (PMH) and Roxboro Healthcare and Rehabilitation (RH&R) initially agreed to provide clinical sites for the pathway.  PMH, RH&R, and Duke Hospital all agreed to provide tours and industry representatives to talk with students about nursing assistant and nursing careers.  At the end, PMH and the Bryan Center provided clinical sites.  Tours were done at each of these facilities.  Duke did send representative to class to talk with students.  Barriers  Did not work to do tour at Duke due to student transportation issues.  State testing at Person campus so we wanted Caswell students to practice there but it created transportation and time issues. Students ended up coming on a Saturday to practice.  School systems paying for state testing but having trouble working out the details with Pearson testing center.

Career Advising  Developed Camp MED boot camp for summer to help students with Developmental English and Math requirements.  Most students did not attend camp due to other commitments. Changed pathway to two separate ones: one with BIO 168 and one without so students could still participate in pathway.  Career advising will be continuous throughout their secondary and postsecondary education through soft skills seminars and industry representatives who come to discuss various job opportunities with them.  This has worked well and will hopefully continue. The Caswell class had extra time due to school system requirements so we implemented the soft skills/professionalism content into the remainder of the course after the students completed the required NAS 101 hours.  Postsecondary transition coaches at both high schools will link students with appropriate faculty and staff and the College

Work Based Learning  Clinical experiences in NAS 101 & 102  All Nursing courses contain a clinical component (over 800 hours of clinical including a capstone precepted experience)  Healthcare industry speakers at set points throughout the curriculum  Students will begin a 72 WBL/internship at Person Memorial Hospital and Bryan Center once school is out. Will complete prior to June 30.

Continuation of pathway  Pathway will be continued using college funds next year.  There are already 35 interested in Person County

LESSONS LEARNED  Classroom and clinical went extremely well-some minor behavior issues that were quickly resolved.  The instructors enjoyed teaching the high school students.  Students were not treated any differently than our regular NA students. The pass rate on the state exam for the Caswell class (7 students) was 100%. The Person students (13) will be taking next week.  State requirements for NA require no more than 8 hours of absence-this caused some problems as students/parents did not understand why time could not be made up.  Students must pass theory portion of class to continue to the clinical portion-issues arose with 3 students who were not meeting the criteria. High school had to come up with alternative plan for those students.  Next year there will be a meeting with the parents and/or an information sheet explaining the criteria. Would like to have a time for them to ask questions before the class starts so there are no surprises.
