6  Establish a purpose for your reading. What question or issue are you trying to resolve?

7  Understand that every piece of evidence can be used properly to help you uncover history’s hidden mysteries and make connections between the past, our present, and the future. Leave no stone unturned!

8  As you use the evidence you are presented with to build your case, remember to step back and question everything!

10  What were the causes of events in the past?  What was the effect of those events?  Who/what made change happen?  How did the event affect people’s lives, the community, and the world?

11  What things have changed?  What has remained the same?  Who has benefited from this change? How and why?  Who has suffered as a result of this change? How and why?

12  How did past decisions affect future actions?  How did decisions narrow or eliminate options for others?  In what ways did decisions significantly alter people’s lives?

13  How does the past help us to understand our world today?  How is the past similar to the present?  How is the past different from the present?  What can we learn from our past

14  How did people in the past view their world?  How did their view of the world influence the choices that they made?  What values, skills, and forms of knowledge did they need to succeed and survive?  How was life in their world?
