7 Local and State Governments Sales Tax: a tax on the receipt of sales (things you buy everyday) Right now the sales tax in Michigan is “6 %”  $20 purchase would now be $21.20  Too much? Not enough?

11 Local and State Governments Property tax: tax created by local governments on homes/ businesses in their towns  Usually between 1-4 % This is primarily what funds schools, police, and fire protection  What could be a problem with this?

15 Revenue Our government uses this revenue $$ to provide us the people with goods and services such as.. 1. National Defense, Schools, Libraries, Roads 2. Social Security, Unemployment Benefits, Medicaid, and Medicare

16 Social Security: a federal insurance program that provides benefits to retired people and those who are unemployed or disabled Medicaid: health care for poor Medicare: health care retired
