Earth, Moon, and Sun Relationships Seasons Eclipses Moon Phases Tides

Warm-up12-4-14 We want a scale model of the solar system. We know that the Kuiper belt is 50AU from the sun paper is only 22cm. How many centimeters is it from the sun to the moon Callisto (a moon of Jupiter) which is approximately 5.2AU from the sun?

From the Reasons for the Seasons

The Seasons

The seasons The earth is always at the same angle = 23.5° The earth takes 365.25 days to rotate around the sun Because of the angle in relation to where it is around the sun, different portions will be angled towards or away

The Changes of Seasons 2 times a year, we have an equinox. What does that mean? In your notes draw where the sun’s rays hit the Earth. What are the dates of the Equinoxes? How long is our day and night? Write these in your notes. 2 times a year, we have solstices. What does that mean? In your notes, draw where the sun’s rays hit Earth. What are the dates of the Solstices? How long are the days/nights of those dates. Write this in your notes.

Summer vs. Winter What dates are represented in the graphic?

Eclipses Eclipses are shadows. To make a shadow you have to be lined up. Depending on what’s making a shadow on what, you have a solar or lunar eclipse

Solar Eclipse- moon’s shadow on earth

Solar Eclipse Sun Moon Earth– The moon is in the middle has a little shadow, this is why we see solar eclipses less often

Lunar Eclipse- Earth’s Shadow on moon

Lunar Eclipse Sun Earth Moon– The earth has a big shadow, this is why we see lunar eclipses more often Only occurs on a full moon

Phases of the Moon It takes 29 days for the moon to rotate the earth – This is why there is a full moon and new moon ~each month Depending on where the moon is in relation to the sun, will determine how much it is illuminated

Phases of the moon Full moon- completely illuminated New moon- completely dark Waxing- when the moon is getting bigger towards a full moon – “wax on” – If the left side is illuminated then it is waxing Waning- when the moon is getting smaller towards a new moon – If the left side is dark, then it is waning

Why not a lunar eclipse every month? We do not have a lunar eclipse every month because the moon is offset from the Earth by approximately 5°.

Gravity + rotation of the earth= Tides! The earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours When the earth and moon are in line you get a high tide= 2 times a day Where the earth and moon are not lined up = low tide= 2 times a day

Spring Tide When earth, sun, and moon are lined up so a full moon or a new moon This is when there are the HIGHEST possible tides This has nothing to do with the season spring

Neap Tide When earth, sun, and moon are at right angles to one another – First quarter or a last quarter moons This is when there are the LOWEST possible tides
