4 A human being is part of the whole we call the universe. A part limited by time and space. He (She) experiences himself (herself), his (her) thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical illusion of his (her) consciousness. This illusion is a prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for only the few people nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison, by widening our circle of compassion, to embrace all living beings and all of nature in its beauty.

5 Compassion - is a mental state endowed with a sense of concern for the suffering of others, and aspiration to see that suffering relieved. Three core components:  Affective component – “I feel for you”  Cognitive Component – “I understand you”  Motivational Component – “I want to help you”

F eeling What emotions are present? What cues are you picking up about the other person’s feelings? T hinking What’s thoughts are going through your mind? Reflection on Common Humanity - How is this person similar to me? Think about them in a different context, as a parent, spouse, child, friend, in search of the same basic needs of happiness, health and safety. W anting What do you want in the situation? What do you think the other person wants? What is your underlying want? Working with Conflict

12 Noticing The current status of our mind is directly linked to our experience of conflict. The way we enter into an interaction with a calm mind or a frazzled mind – will more accurately predict the level of conflict we experience.
