Initial Areas Of Interest The first suggested avenues of exploration that I set for my project during the year related to topics such as Perception, Dimension, Surface, Interpretation, Re-interpretation and Credibility. Some of these topics had been previously addressed by myself in my paintings and previously executed artworks, however I felt that a more intensive exploration of these topics was warranted. This would done with a specific focus on the status, credibility and relationships that I feel are inherent across a variety of traditional media and more contemporary, technologically advanced, media. This initial process of investigation allowed me to form my Conceptual Rationale

Conceptual Rationale ‘Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different.’ T.S Eliot

The appropriation and remediation of ideas, themes, styles and motifs has a distinguished history. Many of the great artists and major art movements owe their existence to the ground broken by their predecessors. Furthermore many themes are universal and are ripe for remediation and reinterpretation for new audiences in new formats. Technological advancement has also helped shape new visual languages as new methods of communication carry with them signifiers of their mechanisms, limitations and implied contexts. Does this snowballing accumulation of wisdom allow for the creation of evermore competent and efficient visual languages and metaphors? Is the 21st century audience sophisticated enough to process and contextualize the wealth of information that is communicated through a variety of media and across a range of platforms? Does this multi layer approach to communication have the capacity to engage with the audience on a variety of levels? Are these levels of engagement determined by an intrinsic credibility that exists within each media?

The Poster Assignment This assignment allowed me an opportunity to make a practical exploration of questions posed in my Conceptual Rationale. I chose to remediate the Steven Spielberg, 1975, film Jaws. I have always been drawn to this film for it’s magnificent painterly cinematography and it’s timeless narrative elements. By communicating the narrative of the film in a combination of ancient and modern visual languages I hoped to address the notions of media and format credibility. I also wished to engage my audience’s intellect as they interpret these seemingly disparate elements.

Cascade: Multi-Media Installation Cascade continues this remediation of the film Jaws. The narrative elements, music, visual imagery, nautical themes and mood are combined with external influences to create an original artwork where the audience member is immersed in a rich sensory environment. There are three distinct elements of the installation that combine to create this unique user experience. The Physical World The Ethereal Realm The Intermediate State

The Video: The Ethereal The video was shot over several days in a number of swimming pools in Ningbo and Shanghai, China. The film was shot on two waterproof action cameras, a Sony AS20 action camera and a seemingly brandless Chinese action camera The film was edited in FinalCut Pro X over two days. Music was used to help add structure to the edit but was removed for the installation edit. The ambient recorded audio remains and a heartbeat sound effect was added. Three sound edits were uploaded to Vimeo and are available on my blog.

Striped Sculptural Forms: The Physical World The most tangible elements of the installation are the sculptural forms The sheer size, physicality and placement of these forms root these objects in the real world They are constructed using plywood, timber and cardboard They were covered with custom printed plastic sheeting sourced in China They were designed though the combined process of maquette making for the scale model and with Autodesk AutoCadd

The design of the stripes was inspired by the John Williams score for ‘Jaws’, ‘Synthesia’ (a piano lesson tutorial software), domestic furnishings, abstract paintings and by one of my own paintings

The Intermediate State This component of the installation brings together the Physical World and the Ethereal Realm This projected video composition attaches the underwater video element to the grounded physical structures Created in Adobe AfterEffects CS6, this element of the installation combines the video with motion graphics onto a projected wall image This component has been adapted to be site specific to each installation exhibition The projected composition was mapped to the space using MadMapper projection mapping software onto site specific screens made from cotton and timber
