Day 7 Science 7 September 3-4, 2009 Goals: Assess your understanding of graph and the ability to construct a graph. Investigation – Pull it all together using RECALL Get set for a CRITTER Investigation next week –Independent, Dependant Variables –What is a control? Why is it important

Self Evaluation Scale of 4 -3 -2 -1 -0 1.Prepared – have all your stuff? 2.Completed? 3.Quality of Work? 4.Understanding how to make a graph 5.Interpret graphs?

Journal “Do Now” Entry Review our Minilab – Height vs ArmSpan September 1, 2009 –Review your Homework – Does your graph meet the SALTPAD requirements – Make a list in your journal Example == S = Spacing … yes I did it right A – Axis – oops I have it flipped L – Label – I have labels but no units of measurement T – Title – My title doesn’t really tell me what the reader is seeing P – Plotting – I did this right A – Analysis – I said a few things but I really didn’t tell the reader what the data tells us D – DATA – it is easy to find in my journal –1 st Period – Don’t Do This –What were the steps you did to collect the data for this lab. Think PB&J – provide enough detail to have someone else do the lab

Mini Experiment - Write Question and Your Hypothesis in Journal Question: Does the height of a person affect the length of their arm span? Hypothesis: An educated guess/answer to this question. Write your hypothesis down now in Journal – There is no right or wrong hypothesis - -You will test it Example: “The arm span of humans is longer than their height”

Background Information –Arm span = tip of finger to tip of other finger with their arms straight out –1 Meter = 100 centimeters

How will we do this? Materials Needed? Is it important that we do things the same? What are we going to do?

How will we do this? Materials Needed? –Everyone participates –Meter Stick – Tool not a toy -- –Data table to write in – copy in journal Is it important that we do things the same? –What do we agree to do the same? –No shoes, stand along wall to measure height –Be aware of personal space and individuality. At your table, collect information for each person, when done, share your information with others so you have at least 8 data points

Data / Observations to Collect NameHeight (cm)Armspan (cm) 1. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Use SALTPAD to help make a SCATTER PLOT of this Data Put Person’s Height on X-Axis (independent variable) Put Person’s Arm Span on Y- Axis (dependent variable) Follow the guidelines of SALTPAD to put together your best effort GRAPH for next class Remember: “A” is for analysis.. After you make your graph write several sentences that EXPLAIN what the information tells you about our question. Was your hypothesis correct? “D” stands for Data – Attach your data table to your graph

Example

RECALL – Method to summarize an investigation Refer to Journal Appendix Your JOB is to write a RECALL summary of the minilab

Key Vocabulary – Glossary Item 1.Variable 2.Independent Variable 3.Dependent Variable 4.Controls

Practice Question? Which brand of tennis balls has the most bounce? Question? Do mealworms prefer water, cheese or lettuce? Question? How much pollution is in the river at certain times of the year?

Work to Be Done for Thursday 1.RECALL Minilab in Journal 2.Observation / Inference Worksheet 3.Graphs – More Practice REQUIRED: WS with Pounds of Newspaper One or Two Additional –Cupid Percentages OR –Human Population OR DO BOTH
