2 Integration of the Armed Forces July 1948, President Harry Truman ◦ Executive order ending the segregation of the armed forces. ◦ Integration of units did not fully take place until the Korean War. Reasons for integration ◦ Reduce racial tensions within the military ◦ Manpower needs produced by the Korean war. ◦ Integration helped to break down stereotypes

3 Integration of the Federal Government ◦ FDR Banned discrimination on jobs that were federally contracted ◦ Truman banned racial discrimination in the hiring of federal employees and ended segregation in the armed forces in 1948. ◦ Eisenhower ordered that required enforcement of non-discrimination in federal jobs. ◦ The Civil Rights Act of 1964 finally barred discrimination in any job and reinforced powers of the Civil Rights Commission to enforce non- discrimination laws.

4 Warren Court Brown v. Board of Education (1954) Miranda v. Arizona ◦ Police must inform suspects of their constitutional rights at the time of arrest.

5 Other Key Decisions from the Warren Court Upheld the constitutionality of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 ◦ Overturned state laws that were discriminatory by applying the 13th and 14th amendments to the states, especially in anti-miscegenation laws (laws against racial inter-marriage). Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) ◦ This decision upheld the right of a defendant to have an attorney even if he or she cannot afford one.

War on Poverty Education ◦ Sixty separate bills that provided for new and better-equipped classrooms, minority scholarships, and low-interest student loans. Medicare ◦ Guaranteed health care to every American over sixty- five. Medicaid ◦ Provided health care assistance to the poor

7 “Great Society” The environment ◦ introduced measures to reclaim our heritage of clean air and water. Job Corps ◦ provided job training for young men and women. Head Start ◦ program for four- and five-year-old children from disadvantaged families that gave them a chance to start school on an even basis with other youngsters.

8 Presidential Election of 2000 Gore won the popular vote Bush won more states, therefore winning more of the electoral vote. Bush won the Presidency because he won the majority of the electoral votes.
