2 The Red Scare The Red Scare: American’s Labor Movement: had stirred up ideas of socialism. The US Socialist Party, led by Eugene V. Debs, won almost one million votes in the election of 1920. He had been jailed for speeches against US participation in WWI-Politicians and businessmen initiated a witch hunt for potential revolutionaries in the US. Palmer Raids:

3 Race Riots East St. Louis: white workers appalled when African Americans were willing to work for lower wages than they would accept. They also worked as strikebreakers. Full-fledged riot ensued & around 100 people died. In 1919, many more race riots broke out throughout the US. Chicago was the worst. Great Migration:

5 Harding Administration Harding’s Political Philosophy- “Return to Normalcy” after WWI-a return to normal life after the war. Created an easygoing atmosphere. Maybe too easygoing -many scandals. Economy settled in the two years of peacetime conversion. Warren G. Harding won the presidential election of 1920. Harding signaled an end to progressive politics and a focus on isolationism. 6 Teapot Dome Scandal The Teapot Dome Scandal- Other Scandals- Last scandal during his presidency permanently tattered Harding’s presidency as one full of scandal and corruption. 7 Coolidge Administration President Harding died suddenly in 1923 and vice-president Calvin Coolidge took over. Known for his ability to solve political problems with a minimum of words and effort. He won election in 1924. Coolidge continued Harding’s policies of minimalizing the federal government’s role in American life. Returned his party’s reputation after the scandals of the Harding administration. Here Comes “Silent Cal”- Election of 1924- Easily won the nod in 1924. Ran against Democrat John W. Davis and Progressive Robert La Follette. Coolidge easily won after running as “Cool Coolidge”. Restored the normalcy that Harding never did!

8 Prohibition The 18 th Amendment: Attempting to Enforce: It was difficult to enforce. Congress passed the Volstead Act was set to lay down strict punishments for violating prohibition. Citizen cooperation was lacking in many parts of the country. Rural religious were big supporters. Regardless, many made moonshine whiskey in the mountain and country districts. Meanwhile, many immigrants with strong drinking traditions like Germans and Italians hated prohibition. Speakeasies & Bootlegging: Repealing the Amendment:
