ANIMAL SURVIVAL

OVERVIEW In this unit we will learn about the different roles animals have in ecosystems, what animals need to survive, and the relationships different animals have with each other.

VOCABULARY Predator – An animal that eats other animals.

VOCABULARY Prey – An animal that is hunted and killed by another animal for food.

VOCABULARY Producer – Organisms that make their own food and are a food source for other organisms.

VOCABULARY Consumer – An organism that cannot make its own food and eats other organisms.

VOCABULARY Decomposer – An organism that breaks down dead plants and animals.

WHAT DO ANIMALS NEED TO SURVIVE? All animals need five things to survive. 1.Energy 2.Water 3.Air 4.Shelter 5.Space

WHAT DO ANIMALS NEED TO SURVIVE? You will work in groups to answer these questions. All members of a group must be ready to answer questions in front of the class, so help each other write down the correct answers. 1.Where do producers get their energy? 2.Choose a consumer. Where does it get its energy? What is its shelter like? What space does it live in, and how much space do you think it needs?

FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS A food chain shows how each living thing in an environment gets its food. It shows who is eating who. At the top of the food chain is the apex predator. This is a consumer that has no natural enemies.

FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS Here is an example of a food chain:

FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS Remember the energy pyramid.

FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS Every environment has its own food chains.

FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS When all of the food chains in an environment are put together, you get a food web. Food webs show the reality of the relationships in an environment better than food chains.

FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS Every member of a food chain is important. For example, what would happen if all of the frogs died in this food chain?

FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS Every member of a food chain is important. For example, what would happen if all of the hawks died in this food chain?

QUIZ NEXT CLASS! Our next class will be in two weeks! You need to know all of the vocabulary words. You need to know what animals need to survive. You need to know about food chains and food webs.
