1 Section 1.01 - Interest Areas – What Do With? Presentation Development Using Google Drive to do a Google Slide Presentation is most highly recommended! Follow the directions provided. Your end product may be counted as a Formal grade or informal – I have not decided. Many will likely end up on the bulletin board outside the room. Some inside the room. Some will be presented. Ensure this product has a consistent and professional and fun appearance. There are 10 steps, so that is 10 points per step when each is well done. READ CLOSELY. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. READ MORE THAN ONCE!! NOTE: You will have 7 slides: 1 slide - cover/intro page slide (done at the end). (Step 9) 1 slide – People Data Things Ideas Chart – with yes/no answers. (Step 2) 1 slide - with 4 Categories (People/Data/Things/Ideas) with “Main Interest Areas Identified. (Step 3) 1 slide – List of 3 Interest Area Occupations and screen Print Occupations Map. (Step 4) 3 slides of your top 3 Interest Area Occupations. (Step 5)

2 ECD 1.01 Interests Section 1.01 - Interest Areas – What Do With? Presentation Development ECD 1.01 Interests Interests – Our interests include hobbies and activities, things we are kind of “interested” in doing more so than other things. There are four main categories of interests. We can use our interests in these categories to help identify college degrees and potential careers that may be a good fit for us! The four main categories of interests are: People – Interest in doing stuff with people Data – Interest in numbers, categorizing, making lists Things– Interest in making, building, repairing things. Ideas– Interest in creative things or creating things.

3 Step 1) Answer the questions on the following slide. Place a yes or no in the box to the right of each question. There are questions in each of the 4 quadrants. Top Left = People has 8 questions. Top Right = Data has 7 questions. See notes below... Bottom Left = Things has 7 questions. Bottom Right = Ideas has 7 questions. Go ahead and answer the questions on the next slide! ………………………………………………………………………………… NOTE: In the top right Data category… Data- Numbers, categorizing, list …be a treasurer of a club? (The treasurer keeps track of all the money that comes in and goes out and reports all of this to the club members) …work with numbers/statistics? (This means to use math to make predictions about what may happen) …balance a bank statement? (This means to take the report the bank provides to you each month about how much money thy think you put into and taken out of the bank and be sure this matches your records of what you put in and took out)

Things – Making, building, hands onYes/NoIdeas - CreativityYes/No Do you or would you like to: bake a cake? decorate a room? repair cars/machinery? write a poem or story? sew or make crafts? publish a school yearbook or newspaper? build something from wood? write lyrics or a rap? operate a cash register or calculator? paint, draw, or watercolor? do landscaping/lawn care? play a musical instrument? operate a camera or video equipment? invent a new product?

5 Section 1 - Interest Areas – What Do With? Presentation STEP 2. ->Open Google Slides. ->Copy and paste, or Print Screen and paste, the slide with your answers into your Google slide. (Thus your slide will have the whole “P EOPLE, D ATA, T HINGS, I DEAS – I NTEREST I NVENTORY ” chart with your Yes/No answers!) Print Screen – This takes a picture of whatever is on your screen. On your keyboard, hold down control key (lower left on keyboard) then press print screen key (top right area on keyboard). Go to Google Slide, press “Ctrl and V” to paste the picture. Right click the mouse, select Crop option and “crop” off anything not needed. STEP 3. ->Make another new slide. ->List the 4 categories. (See slide two of this PowerPoint) ->List the definitions for each category. (See slide two of this PowerPoint) ->Indicate how many “Yes” answers you had for each category. ->Look at the number of “Yes” answers you got for each of the 4 categories. Based on which had the most “yes” answers, decide which area(s) are your main interest area(s). Clearly mark this/these as “Main Interest Area(s).”

Presentation STEP 4. ->Add another new slide. ->GO TO: http://www.act.org/content/dam/act/unsecured/multimedia/wwma p/world.html ->Determine where on the World-of Work map your main interest area(s) would be. (Using the outside of the circle- People, Data…..) ->Indicate on this slide at least 3 Career Areas (Listed inside the circle) closest to your main interest area(s). List these on this slide as “Interest Area Occupations” EXAMPLE: If I had the following: (People = 5 Yes, Data = 4 Yes, Things = 1 Yes, Ideas = 2 Yes.) Then my 3 Interest Area Occupations may be Personal Services, Employment-Related Services, Marketing & Sales ->Do a Print Screen of the map (http://www.act.org/majorsmap/) and paste it and crop it to fit on this same slide with the 3 Career Areas listed. ……………………….See example on next slide. http://www.act.org/content/dam/act/unsecured/multimedia/wwma p/world.htmlhttp://www.act.org/majorsmap/

8 Learning Styles – What Do With? Presentation Development STEP 5. ->Add another new slide. -> Put one of your Interest Area Occupations at the top of each of these 3 new slides. EXAMPLE: Personal Services l Employment-Related Services Marketing & Sales

Presentation STEP 6. ->GO TO: http://www.act.org/content/dam/act/unsecured/multimedia/wwmap/worl d.html -> Click on the first of your Interest Area Occupations. -> Look through the different jobs listed on the right side of the page, finding one that most interest you or fit your interests. -> Click on the job that most interested you. Copy the sections: Work Tasks, Salary, Size & Growth, and Entry Requirements. -> Paste these on the appropriate slide. -> Format the page to look interesting and professional. Step 7 and 8. -> Repeat for your second and third Interest Area Occupation.
