4 Unit 5: Child, Family, and Community Relationships In this unit, you will demonstrate your understanding of building family and community relationships by creating another resource for your Toolkit. The resource is the Parent Newsletter. Ideally, you will be able to use this newsletter in your work as an early childhood professional. This newsletter will comprise the third activity in your Toolkit.

5 Unit Outcomes Identify strategies to support families and build partnerships Discuss the significance of parent involvement to early childhood development Identify community resources for parents and families

6 Unit 5 Project: Family and Community Newsletter This week, you will develop a newsletter to meet the objective of building family and community relationships. Reflect on what you have learned in your degree plan in this area and apply this knowledge to your newsletter. This newsletter should be professionally presented and contain helpful tips for the parents with whom you work or with whom you expect to work.

7 Unit 5 Project: Family and Community Newsletter You will have the opportunity to choose your area of focus. Some topics could include: – supporting children at home – literacy development – promoting positive behavior – any other area that could be a need for your families and community that could benefit parents.

8 Unit 5 Project: Family and Community Newsletter Your newsletter should include the following: A welcome that introduces the topic you will address and coveys a warm and welcoming message to parents and families. Strategies to support parents or student learning at home. At least two community resources in your newsletter that could benefit parents.

9 Unit 5 Project: Family and Community Newsletter Proofread your work: you should have no spelling or grammar errors. You are not required to use APA format for this Project. However, your newsletter should be professionally and neatly presented. Include pictures or other graphics to make the newsletter appealing. Your Project should be 1-2 pages long. Submit your assignment to the Unit 5 Dropbox

10 Take time to review the article, “NEA: Parent, Family, and Community Involvement in Education.” Return in 5-6 minutes to discuss the article. Field Trip!
