2 1. 1875: What did the Civil Rights Act of 1875 do? It outlawed segregation in public facilities In congress, Robert Elliot gave a celebrated speech in favor of the Bill that became the Civil Rights Act of 1875

3 2. 1896: How did the Court Rule in Plessy? It upheld the Louisiana’s “Separate but Equal” Law as legal/constitutional Homer Plessy, 1/8 th black, is denied passage in a white only railway car. The Supreme Court’s decision to allow for a “Separate but Equal” doctrine to continue, will make segregation a legal practice in the U.S. until it will finally be overturned in 1954.
