Lesson 47 – Leviticus 1–10 Intro to Leviticus

The Priesthood Where did the Priesthood start? D&C 84:6-16 – Moses received it from Jethro – Eventually back to Abraham, back to Noah, Enoch, Abel, back to Adam, from God Were there two priesthoods at this time? v17 – “in all generations” – “without beginning of days or end of years” The priesthood was the power to act in the name of the Lord.

The Law of the Gospel The First Set of Tables Moses received two tables of stone from the Lord. These tables contained the law of the gospel

The First Set of Tables Administered through the Melchizedek Priesthood  Faith and repentance  Baptism for remission of sins  The Ten Commandments  The law of sacrifice and offerings See D&C 84:26–27.  The gift of the Holy Ghost  Higher temple ordinances  Authority to bring individuals back into the presence of God See D&C 84:18–22. The Law of the Gospel

The First Set of Tables (see Exodus 32:19) Because of the Israelites’ disobedience, Moses broke the tables of stone The Law of the Gospel

The Second Set of Tables Moses returned to Mount Sinai with a new set of stone tables, upon which God recorded a new law, different from the first (see Joseph Smith Translation, Exodus 34:1—2 [Guide to the Scriptures, 270]). The Law of the Gospel

D&C 84:23-25 “They could not endure his presence” Exodus 20:18-21 (Cross-reference in margins) Remember the SM? How did Moses speak with God? Through the “Holy Priesthood after the Order of the Son of God”. – D&C 107:2-4 – Changed to Melchizedek Priesthood

The Second Set of Tables Because of transgression, the Israelites lost the blessings of the Melchizedek Priesthood (see Joseph Smith Translation, Exodus 34:1—2 [Guide to the Scriptures, 270]).  Faith and repentance  Baptism for remission of sins  The Ten Commandments  The law of sacrifice and offerings See D&C 84:26–27.  The gift of the Holy Ghost  Higher temple ordinances  Authority to bring individuals back into the presence of God See D&C 84:18–22. The Law of the Gospel X

The Second Set of Tables Instead, the Israelites received the law of Moses, administered through the Aaronic Priesthood as a “schoolmaster to bring [them] unto Christ” (Galatians 3:24).  Faith and repentance  Baptism for remission of sins  The Ten Commandments  The law of sacrifice and offerings See D&C 84:26–27. Law of Carnal Commandments:  Ceremonial rites  Mosaic offerings  Civil laws to help Israel remember God daily. The Law of the Gospel

Leviticus What is it? What could you compare it to today? – Aaronic Priesthood manual Who was it for? – Levites – Aaronic Priesthood = Levitical Priesthood This is when the lesser priesthood is established. It is also when the priesthood is spread to more than just the prophetical line. The entire tribe of Levi would administer this “preparatory” priesthood. Preparatory for what?

The Second Set of Tables Jesus Christ fulfilled the law of Moses through His mortal ministry and atoning sacrifice. The Law of the Gospel X

The Law of the Gospel Today In the latter days, the Lord has restored the law of the gospel in its fulness. The Law of the Gospel

The Law of the Gospel Today Administered through the Melchizedek Priesthood  Faith and repentance  Baptism for remission of sins  The Ten Commandments  The law of sacrifice and offerings See D&C 84:26–27.  The gift of the Holy Ghost  Higher temple ordinances  Authority to bring individuals back into the presence of God See D&C 84:18–22. The Law of the Gospel

Let’s Review The Holy Priesthood is the power to act in the highest ordinances of the Gospel and be in the presence of God. The Israelites were not ready and could not endure, so they were given a preparatory law and priesthood. We now have the fullness of the Gospel and the priesthood has been restored.

What is this really about? What is the real reason behind all of this? What needs to happen to be in the presence of the Lord? D&C 131:1-4 It’s about families, eternal life, eternal increase, the power to seal families for eternity. This is the whole plan.

Notebook Ideas How is your experience with the priesthood now preparing you to be in the presence of God? What can you do as part of the preparatory process? What do think/feel about being in the actual presence of the Lord?
