POSITIVE IMPACTS NEGATIVE IMPACTS Employment – tourism is labour intensive and has a multiplier effect more money in the local economy, demand for more buildings, hotels, entertainment, guides etc. Alienation – the contrasts between the tourist- haves and the indigenous-have nots are very great. Environment – tourism brings in money and this may lead to sustainable long term use and investment in the environment. Sex Tourism – prostitution and paedophilia in countries such as Thailand and the Philippines is very common linked to poverty rise in number of cases of AIDS. Culture – preservation of local customs and heritage. Increased local awareness of the importance of architectural and heritage sites and development of craft and art industries to reinforce cultural identity. Westernisation of Culture – Multinational food chains are global and can destroy the unique quality of a place, as well as its agricultural base. Global patterns in music, fashion etc devalue the tourist experience and damage local systems. Education – increase in training and skills of local people growth of information centres, visitor centres and increased education in the visitor. Commercialisation of Culture – traditional dances trivialised, woodcarvings commercialised and packaged, over production of cheap souvenirs. Infrastructure – spin off effect from tourist developments; roads, electricity, gas and water may benefit the whole community. Environmental Destruction – habitat removal, loss of biodiversity, footpath erosion etc
