I would like to tell you about Bristol I have been to during my visiting England as an exchange student. I hope you will not be disappointed by staying with me for a while. Just follow me.

Bristol is a city and a county in southwest of England with population of 437,500 people in 2014. It is the England's sixth and the United Kingdom's eighth most populous city. Bristol got status of a city in 1542 and the former Abbey of St Augustine became Bristol Cathedral.

By the 16th century Bristol was an important port, trading with Africa and both Americas. Nowadays Bristol still reminds an important port. But originally the port was in the city centre. In the 1970s City docks were closed, since then the docklands have been redeveloped as an attractive tourist area.

There are many bars, cafés, museums and footpath lines in the Harbourside area in Bristol’s city centre. Many Bristolians speak a dialect of English, so it would be useful to peek into dialect dictionary before you start a journey.

A number of tourist attractions can be reached on foot or by taking small ferries ( water taxis) that ply along the “Floating harbour". It is called so because the whole dock area was behind locks to ensure the ships remained afloat even at low tide.

Bristol has many brightly painted houses. It is an old tradition of painting individual houses in pastel colors. This tradition is carried on in modern houses as well as many Victorian terraces of the city. I think colorful houses cheer people up in gloomy cloudy days.

Among the attractions there is Bristol Museum (M Shed), Bristol Aquarium and the SS Great Britain, the world's first iron ship, designed by Brunel, and now restored and preserved in the dry dock in which it was originally built.

It is a great idea visiting Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. The museum includes sections on natural history and archaeology. The art gallery contains works by famous artists and modern painters. There is no entrance fee. So you will not only get pleasure but save money.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge across the River Avon. It was designed by the great Victorian engineer Brunel and opened in 1864. Since opening it has gained a reputation as a suicide bridge. There are magnificent views all around. I could not take a selfie there.

Bristol Zoo Gardens maintains and defends biodiversity by breeding endangered species. A visit to Bristol Zoo is an adventure into an exciting animal kingdom. You will come face to face with over 400 species of exotic cute animals from all over the world. I enjoyed it very much.

If you visit Bristol Aquarium you will see over 40 huge living displays featuring fascinating marine life from around the world, from sharks to tropical seahorses.

At-Bristol is one of the UK’s most exciting interactive science centers. At the museum you can touch all museum specimen, explore different scientific things, make experiments. I love museums like that.

Bristol Grammar School is the school where I have been to as an exchange student. The school was founded in 1532 by brothers Robert and Nicholas Thorne. It has got its long history and old traditions. It is the school yard photo, taking by me.

There are many educational Houses there. For example, Sports Hall, Modern Languages, Geography, Art and Music have their own Houses, so students have to move from one to another during the school day.

Some famous persons visited the school. The most well-known one was The Queen Elizabeth. The Queen Elizabeth signed in the school guest book.

That is why it was so pleasant to write my name in the guest book.

They have got a very modern and cozy library. Students can surf the net and take away not only books but DVDs, too. If you ever decide to take a course of English I would like to recommend you this school. They offer different length educational programs for international students.

The University of Bristol is one of the sights. It is ranked amongst the top ten of UK universities. It was established in 1909. It has an average of 19 applicants for each undergraduate place. I would like to continue my education there.

Festivals Bristol hosts a wide range of festivals, including the International Balloon Fiesta, St Paul's Carnival and the Harbour Festival.

Though Bristol is hilly, It is one of the known cycling cities of England. It is home for the national cycle campaigning group Sustrans. There are many opportunities for off-road and mountain biking in local woodland.

You have to be especially attentive while crossing the roads. England is a country with left-hand traffic. Do not forget about it. Have a good journey.
