3  What is an employment tribunal?  Why would an employment tribunal be called?

4  What is it and why does it exist?  Can you name any employment laws?  Look through the handout and complete the associated activity sheet alongside it.

5  There are currently three aged based national minimum wage rates and an apprentice rate, which are usually updated in October each year. The rates that apply from 1 October 2013 are as follows:  for workers aged 21 years or more: £6.31 per hour  for workers aged 18 to 20 inclusive: £5.03 per hour  for workers aged under 18 (but above compulsory school age): £3.72 per hour  for apprentices aged under 19: £2.68 per hour  for apprentices aged 19 and over, but in the first year of their apprenticeship: £2.68 per hour

6  When you start work your contract must be given to you within two months of starting employment.  This must include: o Job title o Employment start date o Hours of work o Pay o Holiday entitlement o Notice periods

7  What does redundancy mean?  Why might this occur?  The legal side – If an employee has worked for 2 or more years they are entitled to redundancy money as compensation.  The rates of redundancy pay are:  half a week’s pay for each full year you were under 22  1 week’s pay for each full year you were 22 or older, but under 41  1 and half week’s pay for each full year you were 41 or older

8  Employment Law Quiz – Discuss each statement in your tables and come up with your decision.  With a different coloured pen, fill in your topic tracker for employment law.

9  Create 2 job adverts. One that breaches employment law and one that complies with the employment law.  Due in this time next week.
