H OW IS S ELF E STEEM LIKE A BEACH BALL ?

W HAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT MIGHT HAPPEN DURING A NORMAL DAY THAT LOWER SELF ESTEEM ?

W HEN A BEACH BALL ( SELF ESTEEM ) IS DEFLATED, IS IT AS RESILIENT ?

W HAT ARE WAYS TO MAKE SURE OUR BEACH BALL ( SELF - ESTEEM ) IS BLOWN UP ?

Q UESTIONS TO CONSIDER : Who are the people around us that affect our self esteem? Why do they? Is low self-esteem a permanent thing? Is our self-esteem the same throughout the day? Who can help us raise our self-esteem? How can we help others raise their self- esteem?

W RITE Y OUR O WN D EFINITION F OR T HE F OLLOWING W ORDS : S ELF -C ONCEPT S ELF -E STEEM S ELF -I MAGE S ELF -C ONFIDENCE

W HAT IS S ELF -C ONCEPT ?  The combination of self-esteem and self- image. It is the way we perceive our whole selves.  Self Esteem:  Self Esteem: the way we think or feel about ourselves *This can change from moment to moment.  Self Image:  Self Image: the way we see ourselves physically.

W HAT IS SELF - C ONFIDENCE ? Believing in yourself and your abilities. Being comfortable in your own skin.

T WO T YPES OF S ELF -E STEEM : High Self - Esteem: Feeling positively about yourself, your actions and your future. Low Self- Esteem: Feeling negatively about yourself, your actions and your future.

High Self Esteem  Now make a bubble map of characteristics of both high and low self-esteem:

S ELF -T ALK Did you know that almost 77% of everything we say and think about OURSELVES is negative?

O UR TOUGHEST CRITIC IS OURSELVES ! H AVE YOU EVER SAID OR THOUGHT THE FOLLOWING : I’m so stupid! I can’t do anything right! I shouldn’t even try because I’ll just mess up! I look so ugly today! I’m such a loser!

The brain will believe what we tell it most. We will become what we tell ourselves we are. Thoughts lead to action. We have to “re-program” what we say to ourselves…

H OW DO WE “ PRACTICE ” GIVING OURSELVES POSITIVE MESSAGES ? Replace a negative thought with a positive one.

C HUTES AND L ADDERS A NALOGY Often our self-concept can feel like a game of chutes and ladders… Ladders: Things we do that build us up and give us a positive self concept. Chutes: Things we do that tear us down and give us a negative self concept.

T HINGS TO CONSIDER :  Do the points in this game even matter?  Everyone is unique and has differences that make them who they are.  We should not be concerned about “adding up points” when building relationships with others.  Our self-esteem should be based on what we feel about ourselves.  We need to work on not caring what other people think and constantly comparing by “adding up points”.

10 T HINGS I L OVE A BOUT M E Your assignment is to list the TOP TEN things you love about yourself! Whenever you catch yourself saying something negative, look at this list and say all ten things out loud! Replace your bad habit with a good one!
