5 Goals are something to strive for; an objective. Goals direct our attention around actions and the motivation needed to reach certain results. Goals can be long term or short term. They represent the destination we wish to reach. 5 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

6 Goal setting helps us focus on the possibility of success. You can share your goals with others you trust. Who can be helpful to you in reaching your goals? Who will not be negative about your ability to achieve them? 6 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

7 Consider You have just been given a million dollars, but you have to spend it immediately. You must spend it. You cannot invest it in anything including stocks, bonds or retirement accounts, and you can not put it into a bank account. What 10 things would you buy with your million dollars? 7 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

8 This million dollar activity helps us to think about long-term goals. What would you like to achieve in the next 3, 5 or 10 years? What about the next 50 years? 8 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

9 You come across an old friend today. You have not seen them in at least three years. You are thrilled to see each other again. Your friend says, “ I haven’t seen you for three years! What has happened since then? You answer their question. 9 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

10 I live in ( town, city, village or township). The car I drive is or the transportation I use is. I work for as a (job title or role). My hobbies and interests are now. I have given up. 11 The exercise helps us look at shorter term goals. What do I want to achieve in the next 3 years? 11 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

12 If you had $100,000.00 to give away to a single charity, what charity would you choose? This activity opens us to think about how we would contribute to our community and others. 12 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

13 Consider The last time I felt successful was ?. The last time I did something I really did not want to do, but did it anyway was ?. The last time I felt happy was ?. When was the last time I felt truly at peace? The last time I was proud of myself was ?. The most current skill I acquired was ?. 14 This exercise allows us to think about our feelings and their connection to events. We may want to experience those feelings or events again. These memories help us to appreciate our life. 14 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

15 Consider You have just won the lottery and acquired millions and millions of dollars!! You no longer have to worry about bills or expenses of any kind! Woohoo! Think about this incredible wealth. Your goals have been shattered. How will you fill each day? 15 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

16 Ask yourself the following: How would you like to spend your time? What would you do then that you cannot do now? Why not? What stands in the way? 16 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

17  Make sure your current goal is exactly what you want to achieve.  A goal may sound good but not be best for you. You need to want it in order to achieve it. You cannot achieve someone else’s goals.  New goals cannot be at odds with those you have already. 17 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

18  Develop goals in the these areas of life! Family and Home Financial and Career Spiritual and Ethical Physical, Emotional and Mental Health Social and Cultural Intellectual, Educational, Skill Based 18 Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership

19  Always write goals in a positive way not inthe negative.  Write your goal out in complete detail.  Make sure your goal is high enough.  Write your goals down and post them where you see them every day! 19 Final Thoughts
