2 Graphic Organizer Today you will begin by writing your thesis and choosing your supporting details First step: choose what essay topic you are going to write about: #1 (character interactions), #2 (tragic heroes) or #3 (choose your own adventure) Next step: write a thesis Third step: choose topics for body paragraphs Fourth step: find textual evidence to support claims in body paragraphs

5 Writing is effortful! Today you will work on your rough draft. Do not aim for perfection – it’s okay to produce a rough draft that needs a lot of work. Think of today as a ‘brain dump’ where you get all your ideas down on paper so you can choose what works best for your final copy. Give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft” You will also do some peer feedback. No negative comments today, only positive feedback about parts of the essay that are working  no judgments!

6 Appointment Calendar On your appointment calendar, find a different classmate for each of the four appointments. You must be the same appointment number for each other

7 1 st Round - Thesis 8 minutes to write and workshop your thesis and graphic organizer. If you have already completed your thesis and graphic organizer, and feel good about it, start looking for more quotes for your body paragraphs.

8 1st Round - Thesis 5 minutes to get and give feedback with your Appointment #1 about thesis statement and graphic organizer. o Is the thesis arguable? o Can the thesis be supported by the text? o Does it include the three main points?

9 2 nd Round – Body Paragraph #1 20 minutes to write a body paragraph that integrates your evidence into your analysis. If you finish, you may start working on your next body paragraph

10 2 nd Round – Body Paragraph #1 5 minutes to get and give feedback from your Appointment #2 o Highlight the 2 best sentences and discuss why you chose those. What is working in their body paragraph? o How well is their evidence presented? o Do the quotes make help prove the main point? o Is there a topic sentence in the body paragraph?

11 3 rd Round – Body Paragraph #2 20 minutes to write a body paragraph that integrates your evidence into your analysis. If you finish, you may start working on your next body paragraph

12 3 rd Round – Body Paragraph #2 5 minutes to get and give feedback from your Appointment #3 o How well is their evidence presented? o Do the quotes make help prove the main point? o Is there a topic sentence in the body paragraph?

13 4 th Round - Intro 20 minutes to write your introduction paragraph (include ‘hook/attention getter, thesis, and preview of 3 main points) If you finish before time is up, look back over it and try to add more When this is done, look for quotes for your body paragraphs

14 4 th Round - Intro 5 minutes to give and get feedback with your Appointment #4 o Does the introduction include a thesis and preview the main points? o Does it have a ‘hook’ that draws you in while you read it?

15 5 th Round - Conclusion 15 minutes to write conclusion paragraph (include restatement of thesis and main points, and an interesting idea that leaves an impression upon the reader.

16 5 th Round - Conclusion 5 minutes to get and give feedback from your Appointment #1 o How well is their argument concluded or wrapped up? o Does the final sentence leave a strong impression upon the reader?

17 Homework Finish writing anything you did not complete in class today Come to the next class period with a typed, printed rough draft. We will do more revision and editing next class period, and final copy will be due next week.
