1 White House Public Tour Virtual Tour of the WHITE HOUSE, Washington, D.C.

2 CONTENT & LANGUAGE OBJECTIVES I can recognize and draw conclusions about the use of each room at the White House. I can role play with a partner/small group and describe a room, also giving my impressions of its use and decoration.

3 QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT AS YOU EXPLORE THE WHITE HOUSE 1.What is the importance of the Situation Room is the West Wing? 2.What is the Navy Mess in the West Wing? 3.Does the White House have a movie theatre? 4.What is the Red Room used for? 5.Where are meals cooked at the White House? 6.Are there any special gardens? 7.(THINK OF YOUR OWN QUESTION(S)) After taking the tour – answer these questions on a sheet of notebook paper. Be sure to add a question of your own to share and ask a classmate.

4 NEW VOCABULARY – WHITE HOUSE TOUR If you come across a word you do not know – write it down. (Also Note where you saw/heard it; the source). Ask a partner about the word or look it up and record its meaning. 6 TEACHER’S PAGE There are actually two links. The public tour is pictures with a few words. The Virtual Tour actually has some videos of some (not all) of the rooms. This will take quite a bit of time to explore and has a variety of links and photos to past and current events, as well as historical information. It may be helpful to print the questions page and the ROLE PLAY organizer activity. page and questions page; as well as organizer. (Pages 3 & 4) Use one video to model activity whole class. (Situation Room in West Wing) My intention was to 1. Introduce students to the wonders of the White House.. 2.Have students create a list of words they don’t know and review their meanings using a dictionary or with a partner. 3.Students should respond to the questions in a complete sentence, and also create a questions (they should know answer) that they can share with the entire class or a partner. 4.They may link to watch and listen repeated times to gather details to help in responding to questions and preparing a “guided tour” of one room. (This could be a partner/group activity) When students share their room – it would be helpful to display pictures that are available of their chosen room on the board. 5.Responses are shared later in day/week. 6.Additional links & organizers done if assigned/time permits/station another day. There are also other videos like why the president uses so many pens – “All the President’s Pens”…and “Letters to the President.” 7.A letter to the President could be an extension activity.
