4 1. A couple should live together before they get married. In the last 50 years cohabitation has increased by 900%. In 2012 7.8 million couples live together without getting married compared to 2.6 million in 1996. In the US, more than half the couples live together before marriage. A couple who hasn’t lived together face a 20% divorce rate, a couple who has lived together face a 49% divorce rate. However, an even stronger predictor of divorce is…

5 2. It’s better to get married younger. Couples who get married younger are more likely to get divorced. Since people are not as mature, they may make the incorrect decision when choosing a spouse and later get divorced. People with lower levels of education also increase the chances of getting divorced.

6 3. The husband should earn more than their wife. In only 38% of married couples do wives earn more than their husbands.

7 4. A single parent can raise a child. With children under 21, there is 26% who come from a single parent household. Roughly 80% of single parent households are with a single mother. 40% of babies were born to unmarried mothers in 2010, in 1960 that was only 5%.

8 5. When people get older they should get married. In the 1950s, 72% of all adults over the age of 18 were married, today 51% of adults are married. The median age at first marriage 1960 - men: 27 women: 20 2015 – men: 29 women: 23 42% of marriages include a person who has been married before.
