3  Why go to university? What is a university looking for in applicants? How should applicants choose courses? 4 Our students are supported throughout the year by their Tutors, The Head of Sixth Form and Mrs Nolan our Careers and UCAS Leader. The following information takes you through Year 12 and Year 13 to give you an idea of what is included in this journey. How do we Support our Students ?

5 Visit by Peterhouse College, Cambridge on the 14 th March. Meetings for those considering medicine/dentistry/veterinary science/Oxbridge Students encouraged to apply for Summer Schools e.g. Nottingham University, Sutton Trust, Uniq Higher Education Evening (tonight!) Students introduced to UCAS and other websites and are briefed on where else to get information Students introduced to the ‘Fast Tomato’ careers website, Which? A Levels January-March 2016

6 HE Fair, University of Derby, 20th April Medical Applicants Evening - students & parents More work in special, extended tutor group sessions on the What, Where, When, How of the application process Opportunities to investigate alternatives to university 27 th April - Visit to Peterhouse College, Cambridge Focus on students requiring support with work experience – Mrs Ellis, Work Experience Co-ordinator April 2016

7 8 th May - Exam Study Leave 14 th -17th June-HE Preparation Week - Careers Day - 16th June, includes sessions on how to succeed in interviews and how to write a personal statement Registration with UCAS. 20th June* - Start of A2 courses –First draft of Personal Statement. Opportunities to visit Open Days, work experience including The Lord Mayor’s Cultural Scheme plus enrichment activities e.g. Lourdes Discussions with students: - about options for Year 13 - to support those who plan to leave *All students are required to attend to end of term to continue A2 in September May – July 2016

8 Final research on courses Publication of AS results Discussion with parents Action planning: students should have a shortlist of places they are interested in One to one discussions with tutor, Mrs Nolan AS results entered into UCAS application Continue application process….. 1 st October CUKAS applications (music only) 15th October: Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry, vet. science applications completed ONGOING applications are also advised to have completed the process by the end of this month August-December 2016

9 Deadline for receipt of applications, 15th January Advice on responding to UCAS Monitoring of responses by tutors, students advised on dealing with universities’ responses Briefing on financing life at university Parent session led by Student Finance England UCAS Extra (another chance for those who have failed to get offers) January –April 2017

10 A2 EXAMS – May/June Third week August : A Level results published Support during UCAS Clearing and Adjustment Result (if all goes well): Happy students about to start the right courses at the right universities or apprenticeships! May-August 2017
