1912 BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME USDA tells states to use a 4-LEAF CLOVER to represent YOUTH clubs 1918 USDA uses term “4-H Club” 1924 4-LEAF CLOVER becomes the “official” mark for 4-H Clubs 1948 Congress gives federal protection for the 4-H name & emblem with “TITLE 18 U.S.C. 707”

It is the legal responsibility of the Cooperative Extension Service & the USDA to ensure the consistent and correct use of the 4-H Name & Emblem by all levels of salaried & volunteer Extension staff, 4-H participants, and authorized non-Extension entities. IT’S THE LAW IT’S A BIG DEAL United State Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Division of Youth & 4-H

The official 4-H Emblem is a 4-Leaf Clover with a letter H in each leaf, & the stem turned to the right, & the Federal mark 18 USC 707 included. USE OF THE 4-H CLOVER

MUST APPEAR AS A COMPLETE IMAGE INCORRECT Don’t even think about creatively cropping it, cutting off a leaf or bleeding it off the edge of the paper. USE OF THE 4-H CLOVER Ooops!

INCORRECT MUST NOT BE COVERED UP ILLINOIS NOPE, even though they make really cute t-shirt designs USE OF THE 4-H CLOVER

INCORRECT MUST NOT BE FADED OR SHADED The clover must be a solid dark green, white, gold or black. USE OF THE 4-H CLOVER JOIN US JUNE 4 XXXXX XXXX XX X X X XXXXX X XXXXX XXX

STEM MUST BE POINTED TO THE RIGHT INCORRECT ILLINOIS NOPE Just say no USE OF THE 4-H CLOVER

Either location is fine, but it’s “gotta” be there MUST INCLUDE 18 USC 707 USE OF THE 4-H CLOVER

By using the “18 U.S.C. 707” we are fulfilling our legal obligation to correctly inform the public of the federal protections and consequences of potential misuse. IT’S OWNED BY THE GOVERNMENT United State Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Division of Youth & 4-H

INCORRECT Don’t rotate or turn the clover on its side. There is an exception when used on printed fabric. KEEP IT UPRIGHT AND STRAIGHT USE OF THE 4-H CLOVER

INCORRECT If it doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t right. CHECK IT! UGH! Just don’t. NEVER DISTORT OR STRETCH IT USE OF THE 4-H CLOVER

COLOR GREEN LEAVES (PMS 347) Hs are white, black, metallic gold or reversed out to the color of the paper or material it is printed on. BLACK LEAVES Hs are white or reversed out to the color of the paper or material it is printed on. WHITE LEAVES Hs are black, green or reversed out to the color of the paper or material it is printed on. 15 PROPER T-SHIRT ETIQUETTE COMMON 4-H T-SHIRT CLOVER ERRORS Clover leaves are the wrong color or are the color of the shirt. Leaves must be black, white, metallic gold or green Clovers are covered up by artwork, club names or other words. Any artwork must appear behind the Clover and completely separate Clovers do not include the federal mark #18 USC 707. Be sure your clovers are large enough on your shirt for the #s to appear clearly. Clovers are stretched, distorted or tilted to fit a certain area, or hand-drawn to create an artistic version of the Clover. Ask your local Extension office for the official logo to provide to your t-shirt artist or vendor.

USE OF THE 4-H NAME 4-H Use a number 4 and a capital H, separated by a HYPHEN (-). Not a dash. Not a slash. Not a space. Don’t do this: 4- H Don’t do this: Our Club. It’s okay to do this: #4H #thats4H Try not to separate the 4 and the H at the end of a line. Don’t replace the words 4-H with a Clover. You may use just 4H when using it as a #hashtag.

DON’T MISUNDERSTAND US. WE WANT YOU TO USE 4-H CLOVERS EVERYWHERE! Stick a clover on it! We just have to protect the image and use it EXACTLY as it’s meant to be used so it will ALWAYS be RECOGNIZED and ALWAYS be OURS.

Information provided by USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Document “4-H Name and Emblem: Policy Guide for 4-H Professionals.” Request a copy from your local University of Illinois Extension Office.
