Extended Diploma in Applied Science BTEC Level 3 South Thames College Robert Amponsah

Topic Quantative and Qualitative Analysis Aims  In fulfillment of grading criteria for Unit 4, P1, M1 D1 Level Level 3 Method This resource helps the students to work through the BTEC applied science assignment, to either work in groups or as pairs/or individual. The Teacher/Lecturer to go through each of the elements and help the students to: carry out quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques, explain how the accuracy may be ensured in the techniques used and evaluate the quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques used suggesting improvements for future investigations. No answers, Students findings on tests. Students to keep accurate records of all their work. Equipment  Laptop/Projector  Hand-outs  Pens/Pencils  Notepads Duration >1 Hour

BTEC Assignment Scientific Practical Techniques Criteria covered by task: To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:  Carry out quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques  Explain how the accuracy may be ensured in the techniques used  Evaluate the quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques used suggesting improvements for future investigations

Scenario At Superchem, in order to select the most appropriate way to analyse samples quantitatively, you need to do some simple tests to work out what is in the samples. You must record the results of these tests for future reference. You have started to work in the analysis laboratory of a large and diverse chemical manufacturer called Superchem. You will need to be trained in some of the basic techniques before you are allowed to do some non-routine analysis. You must keep accurate records of all your work. Task 1 – Laboratory Investigation Assessment Evidence a) What are the safety issues & risk assessments you must consider before your practical work? Task 1 a) In a word processed document conduct the risk assessments of the nine reagents used in your practical's b) You will determine the concentration of HCI, using a standard solution of NaOH b) & c) Write up for both experiments must include date, title, aim, method, analysis and conclusion c) You will use a Titration of primary Standard, Potassium hydrogen Phthalate with NaOH, to determine the concentration of NaOH BTEC Assignment Scientific Practical Techniques

Task 2 – Qualitative Analysis Stage 2 Assessment Evidence a)Carry out various tests for the below solutions: Anions: Solutions 1,3,4,5,6 Cations: Solutions 2,3,4,5,6 a) & b) Produce a report to show the order of the tests performed indicating those anions, cations & food groups that were present or absent. Write valid conclusions for your work. b) You will carry out various food tests on common foods. You will then provide results & conclusions to the tests performed on the various test Task 3Assessment Evidence a)For Task 1 & 2, how can you ensure accuracy in the analytical techniques used in the laboratory investigations? Task 3a) In 500 words. List clearly what you did in your experiments in the task to ensure accuracy? Task 4Assessment Evidence a)Analyse what improvements you could make in the practical investigations in tasks 1 & 2. Task 4a) Research on how you could improve the investigations in task 1 & 2. In 750 words analyse the improvements you will make. BTEC Assignment Scientific Practical Techniques
