1 Omaha System as a Structured Approach to Public Health Nursing Education Debra L. Eardley, DNP, RN, PHN, Assistant Professor 1, Karen A. Monsen, PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Professor 2 Metropolitan State University, School of Nursing, St. Paul, MN, US 1, University of Minnesota, School of Nursing, Minneapolis, MN, US 2 NI PHN Case Study Part 1 Student Perceptions One of the main themes of student comments was having an appreciation for an innovative approach to learning about a PH problem, LTBI and a high risk case scenario, and helped them to learn about Nursing Informatics and a standardized terminology, the Omaha System. Student comments: I thought it was very informative. I especially liked the last couple of slides that showed the SNT embedded in the EHR. Also, it was great to actually see how comprehensive the Omaha System actually is in practice It was an interesting activity, and I enjoyed doing it. I would look forward to using the Omaha System in a clinical setting I really enjoyed the material, and it is evident it was yielded from Evidence-Based studies Hermina's case would be applicable to many people with low health literacy, lack of knowledge/resources and people with different belief systems I liked the Omaha System problem rating scale where you can precisely measure the interventions, evaluations and outcomes Conclusions Case studies are an effective tool for demonstrating PHN competencies that incorporate NI and EBP. The Omaha System mapped to a case study provided a structured approach to guide PHN student’s assessment and analytical thinking. Opportunities are available to implement a NI case study for other PHN clinical scenarios to further support and endorse PHN competencies. Background QUAD Council PHN student competencies include 11) utilizing Nursing Informatics (NI) to collect, analyze, store and retrieve data related to care of individuals, families and groups, and 12) practices evidence‐based PHN to promote the health of individuals, families and groups. One technique to demonstrate achievement of PHN competencies includes case studies. Method A case study was developed for PHN students to identify and evaluate use of a standardized nursing terminology, the Omaha. The Omaha System Problem Classification and Intervention Schemes and Problem Rating Scale for Outcomes were mapped to the case study incorporating the nursing process. Case Study The case study contained two audio tutorials. Part I provided students with a simple tutorial about the Omaha System and its holistic framework. Part 2 included a clinical scenario, a young woman with Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI), a clinical summary, and the Omaha System assessment, interventions and evaluation components. Upon completion of the case study, students took a quiz to measure content mastery. Educational Outcomes Nursing Informatics post-case study quiz resulted with an average of 92% student content mastery, with 18/22 students scoring between 95-100%.
