3. j The term Chain of Survival provides a useful metaphor for the elements of the ECC systems concept. The 5 links in the adult out-of-hospital Chain of Survival are: Recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with an emphasis on chest compressions Rapid defibrillation Basic and advanced emergency medical services Advanced life support and post-cardiac arrest care A strong Chain of Survival can improve chances of survival and recovery for victims of cardiac arrest.

Support the Establishment of Quality School-based Programs –Assure that schools develop and implement evidence-based and medical emergency response plans, which include the following recommended elements: effective and efficient communication throughout the school campus; coordinated and practiced response plan; risk reduction; training and equipment for first aid and CPR; and implementation of a lay rescuer AED program in schools with an established need Advocate that AHA CPR training be a high school graduation requirement. –This training uses nationally recognized, evidence-based guidelines for CPR, incorporates psychomotor skills, and teaches AED awareness. 6. AHA Core Policy Objectives and Guidance for CPR in Schools These policies can be worked on at the local or state level. Training must include psychomotor skills (hands-on practice). The training must adhere to national Emergency Cardiac Care guidelines. The training can be as a “stand alone” offering or as a part of required curriculum. The training can be given between 7-12 grade. Training should include awareness around the purpose of AEDs. CPR as a Graduation Requirement
