2 Home Previous Next Help Background The Hampton Military Affairs Committee was created by City Council action in late 2004 and early 2005 Benchmark research from other military communities conducted to assist with the formation of the MAC Current MAC organization consists of sub committees to include the Executive, Communications, Community Affairs, Liaison, Veteran’s Affairs, and Memorial Park MAC has two City Council members and two City staff assigned as liaisons

3 Home Previous Next Help Mission and Purpose Mission of the Hampton Military Affairs Committee –Promote a strong, healthy, cooperative relationship between Hampton and our local military installations and support our military and veteran citizens residing in Hampton and/or serving in the City of Hampton at Fort Monroe or Langley. Purpose of the Hampton Military Affairs Committee –Support our local military in achieving their mission –Promote understanding and cooperation between our civilian and military communities –Enhance quality of life for military personnel, active and retired, and their families in our community –Promote Hampton as a desired retirement location –Provide support to other military installations in the Greater Hampton Roads as we are able

4 Home Previous Next Help Building Bridges The Hampton MAC has established working relationships with a variety of organizations –Local federal installations and commanders to include Fort Monroe, Langley Air Force Base, NASA Langley, the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Fort Eustis and the Hampton VA Center –American Legion Posts 25, 31, and 368; Disabled American Veterans Chapters 2, 6, and 16; Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 191; Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 824; and Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 607 –Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and Hampton City Schools

5 Home Previous Next Help Major Initiatives The Hampton MAC is also involved in a variety of key initiatives –First, the MAC has played a critical role in moving forward the efforts of Council to place a flag bastion at Fort Wool –Second, the MAC has worked extensively with the City to redesign Honor Park and incorporate as part of the Downtown Hampton Master Plan –Finally, the MAC has been instrumental in the creation of the Hampton Military History Foundation, a 501.C.3 non profit organization that is raising funds for these two important initiatives

6 Home Previous Next Help Representing Hampton The MAC is also involved in a variety of events that reflect positively on Hampton and raise community awareness of the MAC Tree of Hope Soils of Justice Ceremony Phoebus Days, Coliseum Christmas, and Holly Days Parades 9/11 Freedom Walk Day of Hope and Rememberance Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veteran’s Day Ceremonies Military Spouse’s Appreciation Day National Military Appreciation Month (May) HCS letter writing campaign for military personnel serving abroad

7 Home Previous Next Help Future Considerations During the upcoming year, the Hampton MAC will continue building bridges, working on key ongoing initiatives, and representing Hampton. The MAC will also take the initiative to develop new recommendations for Council regarding –Options for additional tax relief for military and veterans –Options for developing an emergency shelter for homeless veterans

8 Home Previous Next Help Special Recognition Contribution to the Military History Foundation –Disabled American Veteran’s Chapter 6 –Recognize our first contribution of $2,000 to the Honor Park initiative
