How do People Use Soil and Water Resources? Chapter 2, Lesson 2

Objectives Identify what natural resources are. Identify air, water, and land pollution.

Natural Resources Renewable Resource: resource that can be replaced within a human lifetime ex. Water, sunlight, plants, animals, air Nonrenewable Resource: resource that cannot be replaced within a human lifetime ex. Soil, coal, oil, old-growth trees, minerals

What renewable resources do you see in this picture?

Air Pollution Caused by the burning of fuels such as coal and oil Smog: a mixture of smoke, water vapor, and chemicals, produced by vehicles or factories Causes acid rain when chemicals mix with water in the air—kills fish, damages buildings and plants Can cause breathing problems in humans There are laws to control air pollution

Water Pollution Caused by harmful substances that may come from factories and mines that dump waste into rivers and groundwater. Sewage: human waste that is usually flushed away by water. Laws protect against water pollution. They require industries and cities to clean surface water. Click for examples of Groundwater Pollution

Land Pollution & Misuse Poor Farming Practices: soil carried away by wind or water poisoned by chemicals. Soil is a NONrenewable resource. Dumps, landfills, poisonous waste cause land and water pollution.

What is a RENEWABLE RESOURCE? What is a NONRENEWABLE RESOURCE? How can we help the problem of air, water, and land pollution?
