The world’s natural capital and how humans use it: 3.3 Energy Resources 3.4 The Soil System 3.5 Food Resources 3.6 Water Resources What is the current situation? What does the future hold? How is the growing population and the changing human development affecting this? What are the sustainable solutions to this?

Energy Resources Whilst watching this video: – write down 3 facts and 1 question. THE STORY OF ENERGY List as many energy resources as you can. Definition – Non renewable energy resources are a finite substance that is being depleted quickly, and can not be replaced in a reasonable time frame, so can run out. Renewable Energy – are resources that are naturally occurring and theoretically an inexhaustible resource.

Learning Objectives All will know a range of energy sources and the difference between renewable and non- renewable. Most will evaluate the success of 2 energy resources. Some will analyse the evaluation of the different energy sources and form an opinion on where they think energy will progress in the future.

3.3 Energy Resources 3.3.1 – Outline the range of energy resources available to society 3.3.2 – Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of two contrasting energy resources – one renewable and one non- renewable.

Presentations on the different types of Energy: Tomorrow you will present for between 2 to 5 minutes on your energy including: Type of energy – Renewable or not – why? Rate of consumption – giving examples of countries that rely on this energy source How it works? Advantages of that type of fuel Disadvantages How will this energy change in the future? What do you think about this energy?

Pairs/threes (pg200) Mario + Giovanni – Nuclear (hand out) + Wood (weblink) Reem, Valentina + Emma – Coal (weblink), Biogas (206) + HEP (hand out) Giovanna + Constanza– Oil (hand out) + Solar (hand out) Pietro+ Fernando – Gas (weblink) + Tidal + Wave (weblink) Georgina, Nicole + Aisha – Fracking (web link), Geothermal + Wind (weblink)

Energy Facts: Energy from the sun is so abundant that 30 minutes received by the earth is the equivalent of all the power used by humans in one year! With current usage Oil will run out in 50 years, natural gas 70 years and coal 250.

Describe the trend of this graph:

Type of EnergyRenewable or NonAdvantagesDisadvantages Oil Coal Gas Hydro-Electric Power Solar Wind Extension: 1.What do you think the future of energy will be? 2.What energy do you think Italy should focus on in the future?

COSTA RICA Set to be the first country to go Carbon Neutral by 2020! (maybe)
