2 License to practice for nurses Definition of license legal document given by the government that permits a person to offer to the public his/her skills and knowledge in a particular jurisdiction, where such practice would otherwise be unlawful without a license It is granted to a nurse by the appropriate authority to applicants/candidates who have fulfilled certain established requirements

3 Need for Registration Primary purpose is to protect the health of the people by establishing minimum standards which qualified practitioners must meet It is the most important tool for legal control and enforcement of nursing practice It is also used to gather statistical data about nurses and nursing in the country

4 Definition of Registration The recording of names of persons who have qualified under the law to practice their respective professions. Nurses names are recorded in a registry or registration book which contain the ff: 1.Full name of registrant 2.number and date of registration age, sex and place of birth 3.place of business 4.post office address 5.name of school or university 6.date of graduation A certificate registration is issued by the PRC to show such qualification

5 Registration Required Under the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002 R.A. 9173 Sections 12 and 20, states that license to practice nursing shall be issued to those who pass the licensure examination

6 Registration by Exam Sec. 12 Licensure Exam All applicants for license to practice shall be required to pass a written exam which shall be given by the Board in such places and dates as may be designated by the Commission. Provided that it shall be in accordance with R.A. 8981 known as the PRC Modernization Act of 2000

7 Qualification for Admission to the Licensure Examination 1.He/ She is a citizen of the Philippines 2.He/ She must be of good moral character 3.He/ She is a holder of Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from a college or university that complies with the standard of nursing education duly recognized by the proper government agency

8 Requirements for Examination The following are the documents required for each applicant: 1.Original TOR with special order from the Department of Education, Culture and Sports 2.For the state colleges and universities, original TOR with date of graduation 3. Records of actual RLE for the entire Bachelor of Science in Nursing program duly signed by the chief nurse of the hospital or her duly authorized representative in addition to the that of the dean of the nursing school and the clinical instructor Cont…

9 Requirements for Examination Cont… 4.Actual number of OR scrub, major and minor operation signed by the chief nurse or her duly authorized representative in addition to that of the Dean of the nursing school and clinical instructor 5.RLE summary 6.Class A or cedula 7.Birth certificate, marriage certificate, alien certificate of naturalization and NBI clearance if there are dismissed cases from the court

10 Renewal of License Any registered nurse should renew his/her license every 3 years with the PRC on the form prescribed not later than the due date as indicated in the PRC license card and pay the prescribed fee

11 Revocation/ Suspension of Certificate of Registration As provided by the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002 R.A. 9173 Section 23, the Nursing Board of the PRC shall have the power to revoke or suspend the professional license or cancel the special/temporary permit of a nurse upon any of the ff grounds: 1.unprofessional/ unethical conduct 2.gross incompetence or serious ignorance 3.malpractice or negligence in the practice of nursing 4.use of fraud, deceit or false statement in obtaining a certificate of registration 5.for violation of this Act, the rules and regulations, code of ethics for nurses and technical standards for nursing practice
