3 Progress? So much changed, so much the same. 5 x GMPS: women half the population, one in four news sources. Agnes Callamard, 2010, former ED Article 19, “gender censorship.” Advocacy – national, regional level; GMBS, GMPS x 2 (50,000 items) Launch of GAMAG two years ago

5 What is happening? Region – barely no progress Seven countries regressed Only three made progress. South Africa (dangers of relying on GMPS country data = one day)

6 Our work is cut out Women there to be seen, not heard Vilified and objectified Subjected to mysogyny – directly and indirectly Subtle, blatant stereotypes – message out there is that it’s a man world and women are not welcome. New media – double edged sword

11 WHAT WE NOW KNOW More female than male students But media practise and content are changing

16 Diversity = good journalism Fairness Respect for human dignity Giving all sides of the story Challenging tired stereotypes What is new Fresh and interesting perspectives Voice to the voiceless! Gender can be the tail that wags the dog, helps to improve public broadcasting!

17 Forgotten Audiences? Women in a diversity of roles A resounding 85% of women and 59% of men in the said the news would be more interesting if there were women doing a wider range of things.
