Recovery tools 3 Acceptance therapy is a Recovery tool

Acceptance therapy

Acceptance Therapy Acceptance is an essential tool for those recovering from addiction

What is acceptance therapy There are many things in life we just can’t change So worrying about these things can cause much stress and anxiety

Acceptance Therapy Can you think of examples of something you cannot change that you don’t like?

Acceptance List Example of things we can’t really change: The weather The economy Other cultures Our genes Our childhood Our past mistakes

Acceptance Therapy Worrying about things we cannot change is unhealthy because; 1.It means unnecessary stress that make us sick. 2.We waste time that we could use to fix the things we can change. 3.It means we feel helpless. 4.It can be an excuse to drink or use drugs.

Acceptance List Write down 3 things you find difficult to accept but are not able to change

Acceptance therapy How to decide if Acceptance is Needed for your client? 1.Identify steps needed to fix a problem? 2.Decide if other people could help you fix the problem (e.g. a therapist) 3.Decide if you can realistically take the steps needed to fix the problem 4.If you can’t identify a way to fix things, the only option is acceptance

Example: John has an interview for a new job. The only way to get to the office where the interview is taking place is to go by train. He gets to the train station on time, but the train arrives an hour late. He is not going to get to the interview on time, and he feels very anxious.

1.Identify the problem? The train is late. 1.Identify any steps to fix the problem? There is nothing John can do to stop the train being late 1.Decide if other people could help fix the problem. There is nobody John can talk to that can make the train come on time. 2.Decide if you can realistically take steps needed to fix the problem. There are no steps identified 1.If you can’t identify a way to fix things, the only option is ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance therapy – Benefits Once we accept that there is nothing we can do to change a situation? It can be like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders!

Acceptance therapy Get your clients to do a - Daily Acceptance list 10 things they find difficult to accept but cant change

Telephone

The telephone We use the telephone to stay connected with our recovery friends We text or call whether we feel good or bad

Why? If we are in the practice of contacting our sponsor or friends then it is easier when we have a trigger, craving or problem

Mindfulness Mindfulness is awareness Meditation Is being in The Here and Now

Just for today In NA we say stay clean “Just for today”

Just for today The thought of making a pledge to never use again can be overwhelming. So we do it… "One Day At a Time”

Here and Now It's important not to worry about the past or project into the future to much, it creates stress and causes relapse So we teach our clients to practice staying in the here and now We focus on doing whatever it takes to stay clean today. We worry about tomorrow when it comes.

Mindfulness techniques Deep breathing: If you feel a panic attack coming on, try taking slow deep breaths We just sit quietly somewhere for a few minutes and listen to our breathe in, out, in, out, in, out… If you focus on your breathing you will always be in the nere and now Anxiety melts away and you will be amazed at how effectively it will relax you! Everything passes

Recovery Tool 9 A Sponsor is a Recovery Tool

Sponsor In Narcotics Anonymous it is recommended that you get a sponsor What is a Sponsor?

Sponsorship A sponsor is a recovering addict in NA Has more clean-time and program experience than you Someone you trust A mentor A guide An instructor A recovery partner

Recovery Partners In Rehab we have a buddying system which is similar – they help with the work assignments Being accountable to someone is an important anchor for recovery Make an agreement with someone to check in daily if at all possible Taking a non-drinking support person to activities.

Recovery Tool 10 NA and AA Meetings Are Recovery Tools

Going to Meetings 90 meetings in 90 days It is suggested that a client go to 90 meetings in 90 days to begin with People who “keep coming back” have a much better chance of recovering. Try out lots of different meetings A.A., N.A.

Meetings At meetings We share our successes and struggles Learn about the steps Explore our spirituality Make friends We meet others beating addiction positive influences Stay motivated

Groups At Hope rehab and other Rehabs – the clients attend many groups so continuing this activity is in aftercare is very important

Meetings Belonging to groups has another effect: it changes how people see themselves, social identity – we define ourselves in part by the groups we belong to (and by those we don’t). That is why belonging to recovery groups is so important in helping people to build the skills and confidence that they will need. It also provides a safe space for making changes

Recovery Tool 11 Spirituality is a Recovery tool

Spirituality In NA meetings and recovery you will hear the word spirituality a lot What is Spirituality? Spirituality is many things to different people Step 2 and 3 of the 12 step program are about Spirituality

Addiction Addiction is a Spiritual disease and has spiritual symptoms…. Loss of interest Depression Hopelessness Lack of connection with others Extreme selfish pursuits Meaninglessness

Spirituality “Up-to-you Higher Power” In NA you may choose your own type of spiritual beliefs or identity You may choose your own Higher Power
