3 Objective: SWBAT: (Content) Demonstrate appropriate language and communication choices in a given situation and demonstrate knowledge of technical jargon. SWBAT: (Language) Write a list of technical terms related to a specific content area and explain their meaning.

7 Why is effective communication important in the work place?

8 Answer: A business study showed workers received an average of 178 messages each day via telephone, email, fax, text, and face-to-face communication. That is more than 22 messages every hour in a typical eight –hour work day.

9 What is Communication? * The process of creating & exchanging meaning through symbolic interaction.

11 Context: “the situation in which communication occurs” This is the framework for communication and is the basis for making appropriate communication choices 3 Components: People Occasion Task

12 a. Role: a part played in a specific setting or situation. b. Norm: a stated or implied; a guideline for what is appropriate in a given situation. c. Appropriateness: what is suitable for a specific situation. Context Guides Your Communication
