The Roaring Twenties!

Industrial Thrive After WWI, the US had one of the highest standards of living in the world. This was in part due to the production of goods in new industries. Factories could produce goods more efficiently which created an increase in the amount of goods able to purchase, a decrease in the price of goods and an increase in workers’ pay. People also began to invest in the stock market. They hoped to invest their money in a company and get rich quick. This was not a guarantee and would be one of the causes of the Great Depression.

Modern Life The 1920s ushered in the more modern lifestyle. Families had more money to spend and more leisure(free) time. Some of this extra free time was because of new appliances created that would help do chores around the house. The US also saw an increase in the number of cars. Families began to purchase larger items using credit and shopping in the bigger department stores.

Women Society witnessed a major change in women during the 1920s. Younger girls were now known as flappers. They wore shorter dresses, cut their hair short, smoked, danced and partied. They were more into having fun than previous females. They were in the workforce instead of just being in the home. They had earned the right to vote with the 19 th Amendment.

African Americans Many African Americans moved north during and after WWI. This was known as the Great Migration. There were more job opportunities available up North in factories and industries. They still faced discrimination and dealt with racist feelings.

Harlem Renaissance During the 1920s, the African American community made major contributions to US culture. The US saw a large increase in African American art, literature, music, and entertainment.

Jazz Age A new style of music was developed during this time period. It was one of the first truly American style music. The new amount of leisure time many Americans experienced created time for people to want to go out and dance/have fun.

Prohibition The 18 th Amendment made alcohol illegal in the US. This lead to the development of speakeasies where people would get together and drink. This also led to lots of crime/violence with the creation of mobs/gangs.

Mass Media/Entertainment The 1920s saw the increase of mass media. People began to use radios. They went to the movies and watched sports. They were able to enjoy this due to the new ideas of a 8-5, 5 day work schedule which allowed for more leisure/free time.

Immigration After WWI, the rate of new immigration declined. Immigrants still faced discrimination as many Americans saw immigrants as having negative thoughts about the government.

Red Scare Communism has started to spread in Europe after WWI. Many Americans were scared of communism coming to the US. In a communist country the government controls everything and everyone is equal. You have limited rights and no ability to make decisions. This fear became known as the Red Scare and many Americans were arrested and jailed because they were suspected of being communists

Ku Klux Klan The 1920’s saw a revival of the KKK. They targeted anyone they saw as being “Un-American. They used violence/intimidation to try to install American traditional values.

Culture War A culture war developed during the 1920s. The war was between the older “traditional” value and the modern “nontraditional” values. This was best seen during the Scopes “Monkey” Trial. Teaching creation from Bible vs evolution from science.
