5 CASE STUDY OF LONDON   London is the largest city in the European Union   The creation of the EU has increased immigration, between 1991 and 2001 the immigrant population of London increased by 50%  The 2011 census showed that 36.7 per cent of Greater London's population were born outside the UK  2011 Census estimates, 59.8 per cent of the 8,173,941 inhabitants of London were White, with 44.9 per cent White British, 2.2 per cent White Irish

9 CULTURAL REVITALIZATION   One of the things that happens to cultures is called cultural revitalization   That is a process through which unique cultures regain a sense of identity, such as through promoting heritage languages or reviving traditions and customs   The Inuit of Nunavut – –Missionaries in the 20 th century converted the Inuit to Christianity – –During the 1950s, the federal government forced the Inuit into to move into permanent settlements – –During the 60s and 70s, oil and gas exploration disrupted traditional hunting fishing and trapping

10 CULTURAL REVITALIZATION   As a result of those threats to their culture, in 1970 the Inuit began the process to negotiate self-government and reach a land claims settlement   In April 1, 1999 the new territory of Nunavut, a 350,000 km   Some examples of revitalization efforts in Nunavut – –Languages children are taught Inuktitut for the first three years of school – –Inuit sculpture and prints are sold worldwide, Atanarjuat – The Fast Runner was the first full length feature film written, directed and acted by Inuit artists – –Government decisions are made by consensus in the Inuit tradition – –The Nunavut Geographic project is working to research and restore traditional Inuktitut names

11 FRANCOPHONES IN CANADA   Laws which provide protections on the rights to use French – –BNA ACT of 1867, states that either French or English can be used in debates and official records of Parliament – –The Official Languages Act of 1969, ensures that Canadians could receive federal government services in either official languages – –Bill 101, defined French as Quebec’ only official language – –Section 23 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives parents the right to have children educated in their first language

12 THE GLOBAL FRANCOPHONE COMMUNITY   La Francophonie was founded in 1970, it is a group of 175 million people, about 3.2% of the world’s population   It includes 63 states and governments   Many of the member countries are former French colonies   The continent of Africa is home to the largest portion of La Francophonie   French is an official language in 33 countries and one of the six official languages of the United Nations

13 THE GLOBAL FRANCOPHONE COMMUNITY   Economics – –Canada and France help raise living standards in countries such as Haiti and Vietnam   Language Preservation – –Lobbying by La Francophonie led to the decision to make all Olympic announcements in both English and French   Telecommunications – –La Francophonie created TV5 which broadcasts news, sports and entertainment in French, a large share of the programming is produced in Canada
